okay, not that spectacular. Basic story, computer got wiped and so did designs, so im starting again with some more levels and hopefully i will change the generaltiles.bmp so that it is more spacey. Is there only one person doing DRODIS now then?

Sorry for the late response wackhead. For the past month I (gamer_extreme_101) have been starting on the style bitmaps(Style1Tiles, and Style2Tiles. Progress has been slow lately though, as I have had various other projects to work on (both DROD and Real Life [TM]). However, a new one is soon to come.

Which brings me to something I've been meaning to point out to you DiMono. As far as space goes, you can only do the black backdrop with stars so long, so I think we may need to expand our thinking. Doom had a very good idea going with his "Space Castle" theme, and I think we may be able to borrow a page out of his book. I'm currently finishing up on my latest, which is a very deep red space background (Which I had planned on using for Sanctum), but then I want to get into a couple of different ideas. They should still be space-y, but just not star background & asteroid.

BTW: If you ever need to take to me when I'm not on the forum, feel free to e-mail or MSN me at gamer_extreme_101 [AT] hotmail [DOT] com. I'm usually on it while I'm working, so it shouldn't be too hard to miss me.

I was actually thinking about suggesting using the space station theme as part of the package as soon as I saw the thread, but I decided to sit back and see what would develop. That's the beauty of only having done GeneralTiles.bmp myself: it's the same across the board :D

I have a suggestion/ideas for your style you're cooking up right now or sometime sooner. Since you're have a red background how about the walls be some floating space metal/junk, crumbly walls would be a less dense space metal/junk, the statue would be a nearby star (white dwarf star?) and the pits/trapdoors could be like the pits in style 7 but in different colour.

By the way gamer, I have not taken the time to congradulate on what hard work you have been doing throughout the forum. Giant kudos to you!

Along with the space station, I'd also like to do a couple of planetary one. Mars would be a nice one to do, along with a couple of other ones would end up working as well. That would mean that as it stands right now, we would have:
3 Starry Space backdrops
1-2 Space Station
1 Low Orbit Earth
3-4 Planetary Landing

I think that that sounds about fair. We may add/subract more as we see fit. And thanks for the compliments Stuwy. Unfortunatly, there may be even less work done by me soon as I go back to school on Thursday(Groan). I just feel bad that I haven't had enough time to work on all my projects. That's life, I guess. :)

gamer, I give you full support to design whatever tilesets you see fit for this project, and thank you immensely for all your hard work on this in my inability to continue my own efforts. Believe me, they're greatly appreciated.

I am currently designing a whole new look for the generaltiles.bmp fiel because i wanted to make my own tileset to go with a level i have already made.
i have just finished making a tileset for a level based on style 5 that has THE BEST pit falling animation ever that took me really long to do. unfortunately mine isnt really spacey, like I said earlier, but more futrure-y :glasses (I didnt want to say futuristic). I am stuck on making new monsters on the generaltiles.bmp so it will be a while before i finish that, but when im done with that I am going to change the gamescreen.bmp picture to go with my replacement for the scroll, a weird little PDA-type thingymajob. I also hope to record a few new sounds, as i have got my hands on a program with a lot of weird sound effects. *Watch this space!*

Attached is the new level I made but the walls aren't really done yet.

And by the way, I'm not trying to undermime anyone else's efforts by doing this, I am just really bored and have a lot of ideas.

Don't worry, nobody in this thread is gonna mind undermining of efforts. It's all just one big collaboration! Though if you're redoing GeneralTiles.bmp and GameScreen.bmp anyway, why not start up a separate project? You're doing your own thing anyway, so why restrict yourself?

We all support you dude, keep up the good ...man, I never thought I'd resort to cliche...

I can not think of what to do for the roaches, though I think I may do them as weird spiders.

And I've decided, When I have finished all of my things, Im going to start a new thread ad post one new thing every week so that you can have the whole set, purely because I think it would be a bit big to have it all on at the same time.

Im not sure though, I havent finished yet anyway. snakes next!

Well, as this project starts to slowly wind down, I have a couple of questions to pose...

1. For the final product, I would suggest to make a self-extracting zip file with all the files in each of the bitmaps and sounds folder. I own the full version of WinRAR, so that should be no problem. I can easily take care of that when the time comes.

2. Unless you have an aversion to it, I'm hoping that you will take all of the 9 style bitmaps that we have and choose a suitable order for both KDD and for the respective music. If we want to, we can even mix/suffle them around. That'll be no problem if we need to add/subtract/shuffle the music.

3. Do we want the in-game faces changed? If so, to what?

4. We need to fix the last of the sound files that need changing. From all the ones I have (Including wackhead's), Beethro and Neather sounds are all that's left.

Argh...something else too....it'll come to me eventually. :)

Easy as pie, eh? Well, over here the title is coming along at a slow pace. I included a quick screenshot of the early pattern in which I'll be basing it on. The "DROD - In Space" will probably end up being the same font, and I'm leaning towards the bottom one.

Actually I like the two different fonts. Also, are you taking the changes I suggested for the sound files on page 1 or 2 of this thread in to account at all? Not trying to enforce them, just making sure they're considered to arrive at the best product in the long run. I still think they're valid.

Has anyone got anything like wave studio or something? because I know that on thaat you can add effects that make sounds weird. It would be better, I think, if the voices, etc were just made to sound more echoey or reverbery so that they sounded robotic. Then it would have some element of the original sounds. And very good on the title screen!

For the zip file, I think that it should have something which either backed up the original bitmaps and sounds or advised you to do so as well. And is that version of Winrar a bit dodgy, if you know what I mean?

I am attaching my generaltiles.bmp file to this post just so you can see what I've been playing with on my DROD so far, because it will probably never appear again.

Now this has nearly ended (?), I would like to say a big thanks to everyone working on this project, and to the almighty creator of DROD for allowing this to continue out of our heads.

And remember, fad or not, its here to stay!

Two fonts kept, and I completly missed you comments beforehand...I guess I had better hunt them down and see what can be done...

I own Wavestudio and an Audigy, so I'll easily be able to do some robotic voices with EAX. I also need to find some sound effects for the menu once I'm done with it. I'm proud to say that I finished the "Restore" button animation, but it does take a lot of work...
For the zip file, I think that it should have something which either backed up the original bitmaps and sounds or advised you to do so as well.
I think it would probably be best to do 1 of two things...make a "Restore to Default" executable included with the package, or just give fair warning that it will erase all files and tell people to make a different installation of DROD and extract it to there.
And is that version of Winrar a bit dodgy, if you know what I mean?
I've used it's self-executing Zip mode a couple of times without fault, so I guess I don't know what you mean...

Well...I have my last tileset, but I may give that up to you as I have many other things to do. If you want to take over the last space one, I can hand over to you what I have so far and turn you loose on that while I finish Title and Dialog. Aside from those and a bit of testing, it should be done....and probably before JtRH. I personally see that as a good thing, as it will hopefully give everyone something new(kinda) to play with until 1.7/2.0 shows us it's glorious face. :)

The whole team (In order of joining) of DROD - In Space! consists of the project leader/GT graphics man DiMono, Stuwy for Sound Effects, Moi for Graphics, and you for Sound/Graphics (If I missed someone, feel free to smack me on the back of the head)...and what a happy team we are! Everyone put in a wonderful amount of time and effort into this, and I'd like to thank everyone as well, including DiMono's guidence and leadership on this project.

And remember, fad or not, its here to stay!
Amen :)

Alright, so the impression I'm getting is that we have a bunch of StylexTiles.bmp files, like nine of them (more if people keep working on them, which I encourage). When wackhead and Patrick both finish up with their bitmaps I'll gather them all together and see if there are any tweaks I'd like to apply, and then re-order them to something that makes sense.

The very last post on page 2 has the zip file of the existing sounds, and the first post on page 3 is my comments. Once all the bitmaps are in, including the title screens and Beethro getting an impressive facemask or something to indicate he's in a ship, and I've done my thing, I'll zip them and throw them up in a new thread. Once the sounds are ready for showtime I'll add them to the zip. Someone else can worry about making an exe file if they want, I trust the people on this forum to follow the readme.txt file I'll include in the zip.

Doing the zip file and such will be fine, but I'd hold off pre-releasing it until everything is done. The title and dialog will take a good chunk of time (2 weeks-ish), so we might as well do one big release rather that 2. Just a thought...

I am going to make a level with articons and see how that works. I am going to make it special thouygh, so it may take longer than usual, and I am currently not at my own house anyway. Are the beethro sounds being kept and justy changed then?

And by dodogy I meant copied.

In regards to music, I found an interesting site here that has some very interesting MIDIs for use. The only conditions he asks for non-commercial games is an in-game reference and a link to his website where the game is downloaded...all of which I should see no problem with either of those.

For the past little while, I've been downloading most of his and have found a couple of notables. Some I will admit have a bit of a medieval theme to them, but these are just some suggestions to keep our options open.

-Trailblazer - This would be great for the Title Screen I'm making..it could be used as a level too.
-Methydias Cloudship - I could see this working for Style7(Clouds).
-Victorious Days - Perfect for the stairway journey.
-12 Warrior Xg ties into the grass one of wackhead's. It's got a nice upbeat tempo and could work for it.
-Communication is a nice future-y kind of song.
-Lottr Lady of the Hells could work as well.

Well...those are my suggestions anyway. Take a look and make a final decision.

-Patrick

After going through the majority of his music, I picked out my favourites. The ones in bold are the ones that are suited for each style/setting.

Credits=settledown.s3m
Game1=bjorn_lynne-the_enchanted_orchard.mid
Game2=bjorn_lynne-lottyr_lady_of_the_hells.mid
Game3=bjorn_lynne-communication.mid
Game4=bjorn_lynne-valley_of_the_clouds.mid
Game5=bjorn_lynne-the_long_journey_home.mid
Game6=bjorn_lynne-incoming_signals.mid
Game7=bjorn_lynne-methydias_cloudship.mid
Game8=bjorn_lynne-understatement.mid
Game9=bjorn_lynne-12th_warrior_xg.mid
Intro=bjorn_lynne-trailblazer.mid
LevelComplete=nextthingsnext.s3m
WinGame=weseeyounow.s3m
WinLevel1=bjorn_lynne-victorious_days.mid
WinLevel2=bjorn_lynne-victorious_days.mid

Style 9 is perfect for the Neather...the rest will all find a home I'm sure. And BTW - say what you want, but I'm keeping the title music. Listen to it, and you'll see why. :)

Meanwhile, in Graphics land, I have got the basic outline to the title screen done. Most notable changes include moving the text to the top, adding a control panel instead of the bricks, adding the music credit(If we decide to use the music) and changing up the names of a couple of options(whEre to planEts; Restore to pRevious missions, etc.). All that's left on my part is to finish the animations for clicking and figure out what to do with the open space. (BTW - The Heads graphic will not be used. I see no possible way to incorperate it.) I also need to finish up Style3 and the Dialog.

I was talking to wackhead on MSN yesterday, and we finished up the idea for the last Style - Polar. Basically, an Antarctic planet. He had mention something about roaches in ice for the statue. That could be interesting. I'm looking forward to that.

I re-read the page on the Sound Effects, and have been looking around a bit for them, but have yet to find any. Puttering/sputting had left me blank, but I have yet to look for a metallic laugh. Worst case, I could take a laugh and add a bit of EAX effects to make it sound metallic.

I'm gonna try to finish Style3 ASAP so you can have the fun of organizing them. I'm also gonna try and hide the crumbly clouds in Style7 to fit the original them of it. Just need to do a touch bit lighter on it from the walls.

Well, that's it for now (Thank goodness! :)). Luckily, I have Friday off from school to get a whole schwack of this done.

-Patrick

As a reply to the post that the walls on my Style3 were unseeable, I am having a problem on my DROD. Even If I colour in the cracked walls in black, they do not show up on the level. Any ideas?

And as to the polar level, I have done the roach in ice as a sort of ice-core sample with a roach in it. The pit is coming along well with articons as well, and I'm trying to illegaly unlock it currently...sorry, I meant legally make sure that it does not have a time period on it. ahem.

Edited: I had the wrong style number so I know what was wrong anyway!

Yes. I actually bought the full version after usuing it for 15 days. It really is worth it. Besides, it's instances like this that cause application prices to go higher and have companies go out of buisness. Imagine if DRODIS was a trial period and we were making money off it. Would you want others cracking it? No. Either find a fully open-source program or go back to paint. I'm sorry for that, but I'm a bit touchy on that matter.

THE WORST PART IS OVER!!!

I've finished the worst part of the title screen, the clicking animation, and all I need now is to fill in the blank black spot in the bottom corner!!! I've left the "Music by Bjorn Lynne" in the corner for now until I get confirmation from DiMono that we should use it, and then I'll send him an e-mail describing what we are doing to him. Might as well let him know his music's being used even though he didn't state that you had to.

As much as I hate to say this, I think we should scrap the cloud tileset and switch over to a polar one for the spiders. The cloud one isn't the happiest of tilesets, and the lack outline thing doesn't help that at all. Might as well let it die a peaceful death and work on another tileset to fill the gap.

Would anyone mind if I find a different,open source, more future-y/space-y font for the game to work with the Dialog.bmp file I need to make? The one right now has more of a modern theme to it than anything, and it'd be nice to continue the theme onward.

Well, still have some more work to do...better get on it.

-Patrick

First of all, yeesh! big file to download!

Second, attached is the zip file of all my work so far on DRODIS. It is not complete however, and I am really only putting this on to show what the levels will definitely be like.
I am taking my generaltiles off to make room for this anyway. Did anyone like any of it?

Changes:
1. Added part of style9tiles - polar - not complete
2. Changed trapdoors on botanical level

Thirdly and lastly, Gamer, I have done my part of the polar tileset and I have left you to do the floors and the walls and even the roach in ice if you want, but please GOD leave the pit thing the same. It took me so long to make that. :weep

Fourthly, my version of Articons has got stuck on the fifth day of the trial period! weird.

Edit: haven't some other people posted levels on this thread? can;'t we use one of those and give them credit in DRODIS as well? And wouldn't it be cool if we made a hold that ha and end level like level 1,1W? Then we could put all the credits there.

Firstly, only you & me have posted levels on this thread. Stuwy found the original sounds for this, and DiMono posted a quick help of style7 for me.

Secondly, it will be near impossible to change Dialog.bmp as the text, no matter what font it is, surrounds itself with beige, and I have found it very hard to make it look nice but continue the space them. I don't see that as too much of a setback. To make up for it, I think that the background attached will help for most of it.

Gamer I think you should move the "DROD In Space" Title a bit downwards, since the heads are in front of the logo.

P.S - A beta preview with snapshots of what is looks like coming soon!

Ack! I forgot about the Heads file! Let me dig it up....

Here it is...If you were to look at it right now, it would be a large green file, only because I am still debating over what I can do with the animations. I've been thinking about trying to do stars that kinda "glisten", but am still having doubt about it. Odds are, if I do decide to do it, I would not ship it in the first release of it and send it as a seperate file. To do this, I would need to ship both titles to the bottom of your screen, so you could use that as a clue, I guess....

Firstly, I'd call it more of an Alpha preview as we don't even have everything made. We are still 1.5 tilesets shy, but as I write this I am putting the finishing touches on the Polar one and wackhead is working on the last on, which will probably be best for sanctum. Best of all, I'm leaving it secret! If you want to find out what I speak of, download DRODIS when it gets released.

Oh, and if you are making screenshots - don't use the Clouds Style7...I found it too amateur and too problematic. It is being replaced with Polar, and I don't want any bad memories of it.

Ice, Ice, Baby.....

Polar is complete, and I LOVE my frozen roach. :) Right now I wait for wackhead to finish the half of style9. I also need to find some sound effects as well and do a bit of touching up to the dialog (Or as much as I can anyway.)

Concerning that tileset, I have thought of doing it a bit lighter than I said, as it would look more like the place it is supposed to look like if you know what I mean ;)

I have to say, that Polar tileset is pretty sweet. I'm really looking forward to getting all the files collected in one place so I can finish it all up. I can't say enough how much I appreciate all the work you two have done, picking this up when I didn't have time to keep running with it. You've both put a lot of effort in to this, and I know we'll all be really happy when it sees its official release.

Coming soon!

Good news to all! Me and wackhead are putting the final touches on the last 2 Styles, meaning that I should be able to send you the final compilation of them sometime tomorrow, and DRODIS can go Beta! I also sent an email to Bjorn Lynne, the guy who wrote the music to make sure we don't need anything else for credits besides his name on the title screen, his name in the credits text file(Which we'll need to make), and a link to his website near the download for the file. His website is www.lynnemusic.com if you need.

I'm at a standstill for Neather sound effects, so I may just make some on my own. I can EAX the files to give them a "Robot-Metallic" sound to them as well.

Oh, and can you PM me your email DiMono? We have 2 tilesets that we would prefer to keep secret just so that there is a bit of suprise when we release the thing. Either that, or we do a
"Hide it in the depths of the forum until you get it" kind of deal.

Alright. I have just finished off my last tileset and Gamer has finished his to the best of my knowledge, so we have a complete tileset set...set. Check you PM inbox Gamer (I dont know why, but its weird to call you that)! I have sent the goop level with finished "trapdoors" if you can call it that, and it is okay apart from a slight glitch, but read the message.
