Okay, time to post my rule.
This rule was a little more difficult to enforce consistently than I thought.
For starters, I was going for
Roman numerals. Not the sum of them, but the largest Roman numeral substring in the word.
But what to do in the case of the word
six? I decided that I would score the entire numeral substring, which scores 9 as opposed to 10.
But then things get even hairier when you have invalid Roman numeral substrings. The word
fixing contains ixi. I decided that when presented with an invalid substring, I would take the largest valid substring of the invalid substring, which in this case was xi, scoring 11. This means that
six still scores 9, since its substring was valid to begin with.
But then the word
vixen got me all messed up. The substring vix is invalid, but x would be the largest substring of that, scoring 10.
Bah, too many special cases here. I'm going to shut my brain down now. If you got as far as Roman numerals, I'll go ahead and consider you a winner.
