Obviously, I didn't read the explanation while making up my mind - I didn't even know it existed. I see what you meant now, and I like the idea - but I didn't get that from the map itself, which was what I was reviewing.

Oh, yes, I perfectly understand...it was mostly my mistake in drawing a map that required an explanation that couldn't be posted until after the contest was over. Well, that, and my horrendous freehand drawing and handwriting. :D

Game on,

I didn't vote for Hawk's map because Sun Island is in the wrong place...

Anyway, I voted for Clayton's map because it looked like it had the most land mass, and there were a few amusing place names. In retrospect, I agree it didn't have much topographical information, but for the purposes of this contest that wasn't really required.

Still, Clayton, if you feel that badly about winning I'm willing to take that cap off your hands :D

I think Clayton's map had a lot more merit than just being pretty. For me, it really explained a lot about the Eighth that was difficult to visualize from the description alone, such as how the 8 pieces come together and repeat, how the sun works, etc. All very spiffy, but necessarily a prettier map can show this better. Plus this is for posterity, right? Gotta use the tools at your disposal. I was thinking of ray-tracing one, but time was not in favor of that. I thought the other maps were nice, too, I just thought the way this thread was moving, I would add another positive note for the map that won. I guess I'm wondering now is if it is set in stone? or does Clayton just become "the map guy"? But anyway, nice work!

Peace in the dungeons,
Koro

Hear, hear!

No, I'll be making a new map of my own design and use some parts from each of the four maps. Maybe throw in Nomb's Tomb and Blorn too. This will be the Master Map of the Eighth, real official and all.

Interesting. Well done, Clayton!

Personally, I felt Clayton could have done with more landmass closer together, but then it's his map and however he wants to do it is fine.

I'll admit that my map was thrown together in Paint (except for some fiddling - the ice ring was done in Gimp, which actually decided to work with me), but the ideas were important, I felt. And then I saw Clayton's map, and I think I speak for us all when I say 'dayum'.

Mine was oriented the other way to everyone elses mostly because I liked that look better from an aesthetic point of view. It certainly could have done with some more detail - quite frankly, I ran out of time. On the other hand, it gives people plenty of places to put themselves, so that's all good.

As for the others... well, Red's was a bit screwy, with Sun Island on the wrong end, Oneiromancer's was pretty good (although I liked mine better) and Clayton's I though had too many islands and not enough continents, but that's just personal preference. Not sour grapes. Promise.

Well done, Clayton! Enjoy your cap!

Matt

Take the cap, man.

*sigh* Very well, but first I think I'll wait to see the poster you create. If it's great, I'll take that, if it sucks, I'll still take it and wear it like a cap... :closedeyes

When I've got some free time (I always do, but some I'm willing to devote), I may add some topographical info, as well as make an ice band in it too. Any other suggestions?

Still, Clayton, if you feel that badly about winning I'm willing to take that cap off your hands :D

....no. :thumbsdown

Thanks, someone said they pictured the Eighth being a cone, but I always imagined it like a disc. Although I think a cone would be cooler looking, 3 Dimensions scare me. -_-

The thing is, the more land I were to put into a slice, the more touching up I had to do when I fix the slices together. I kept the large land masses on the edges, while islands stayed in the middle. Seemed safer that way. I did the same thing with my first attempt at the map...

Hmm... I've attached my first attempt.

Here's the map I was making until I realised that it didn't follow the guidelines and then didn't find time to start over properly. The main reason for me posting it is not to show an incomplete design, but a nice way to make the actual map:

Glue the white part on the back of the other edge, thus creating a cone. Now find on the map a place that is as far away from you as possible and flatten the cone so that this place is at the edge. Now you have a slice of the eighth centered around your current location. (On both sides of the map even!)

Nice map attempt, Mikko! That looks more like a Sixteenth than an Eighth to me, though. :D I also agree 110% with what Koro wrote. Cheer up, chum; you won the contest fair and square.

Fair enough, I actually got a bit of a chuckle out of it. It's still pretty impressive as a hold level.
