I was probably just lucky to solve the nonsecret version. After much effort, I have two pairs of serpents left. Yet no manipulations have landed me to progress further. I'm wondering if the room is solvable in my current position.

You do alright untill the point where you only have 3 serpent pairs left. The end of the room might give you a bad surprise though... There's a surprisingly easy trick which will take care of that later, though. For now you just have to know that you need to kill the third to last pair of serpent in the same way you have killed the other southern serpents.
