I agree about Motas (mystery of time and space), that was a brilliant game..
Bricks is a pretty cool puzzle game. Push blocks around to try and get one block to its final position - not really like Sokoban though. You can see at the site. Best thing about it, once you get a good enough score (least number of moves over the whole game), you can get Bricks 2. And then do the same there. I think they're up to around Bricks 4 now..

http://www.neopets.com, among other things, has a some rather interesting puzzle games. There are also a lot of silly and annoying ones, so it can take a bit of effort to find them - but my favourite is Hannah and the Pirate Caves, which is a puzzle platformer that's heavy on the reflexes but later levels require some good solving skills.

Inspired, I guess, by bibelot's hold, I pulled out the Cliff Johnson game The Fool's Errand and gave it a play-through yesterday and today. I forgot how good the puzzles at the end are, I went through two pieces of paper figuring them out. Ah well, on to Exile!

I have The Incredible Machine 3.0 and have solved all the Easy and Medium puzzles, but am stuck on some of the Hard puzzles. Sierra doesn't seem to offer any help - at least, I didn't find any. Does anyone know how to find solutions? Thanks, all.

mrimer wrote:
There is a walkthrough on the web. ...at least there WAS a solutions page... Ok, here's one for "Even More Contraptions" (the add-on) at:

http://www1.freewebs.com/pjhussey/

There was one for "Contraptions" (the first one) at:

www.theincrediblemachine.net/solutions/index.php

...but it seems that Sierra took it down recently... :( (Do a Google search on "the incredible machine contraptions solutions expert" and click on the "Cached" link to see what it was like.)

But I've been through all the "easy" boards, so they ARE all solvable. :)

Triple Triad Gold is awesome.
For those who don't know, Triple Triad is the card game from Final Fantasy VIII. Triple Triad Gold is the best remake of it available.
It does'nt support internet play, but you can play two on the same computer, or against AI.

Well... not really a puzzle game, but it's free (GPL), and turn-based.

Ufo:Alien Invasion .

http://ufo.myexp.de

In early development, but amazingly playable for a tech demo. Just look what wonders can you do with quake2 engine ! Linux and windows versions available.

The Mac-only follow-ups, At The Carnival and 3 In Three, are nice stuff as well. At The Carnival is the weakest of the three with no plot and fairly predictable answers, but 3 In Three is like The Fool's Errand, but take out the Sun Map and throw in cinemas, which advance the story along nicely (with character development and everything, although being a non-linear story it's a bit hard to tell.)

Do you know if there are ports to PC for these? Or an emulator? I'd look, but I'm really rushed right now what with not having started an assignment that's due in 25 hours. Word to the wise: don't procrastinate unless you're VERY good at what you do.

And I think At the Carnival is for PC as well. The Mac emulator I used for 3 in Three is called Basilisk.
And another nice Mac-only game in a similar vein is called System's Twilight. Try it.

Yeah, I'm not sure about System's Twilight. I hope it gets better, but I didn't like it as much as 3 In Three.

Basilisk is good. The Underdogs has a good page on non-PC games with step-by-step instructions to set you up.

Somehow, I don't know how, I found this game:

Aura

It's basicaly a maze game in the dark. There's no display code - the menus are done entirely by speech. You work out where the walls are by bumping into them or feeling them out, there's drips, there are tiles that set off little rings. It's extremely disorientating (you know, because you're blind) but an interesting challenge.

Of course, then they have to introduce monsters. I'm not a huge fan of maze games with monsters, unless they're turn-based, like DROD. But still, the idea is unique enough that it's worth passing on, and it's illuminating how much we rely on our eyes.

Ok, a few more games:

- First, one of the masterpieces of internet puzzles has not been mentioned yet - Planeterium. If you haven't played it yet, you should - though be warned that because of the fact that it only send you one puzzle a week for 13 weeks it requires some commitment. But solving it was one of the most rewarding feelings I ever got from a game.

- Second, as for System's Twilight, I found it became more fun as I went along and understand more of what's going on, but it's not as good as the Cliff Johnson games - it's difficulty level is too high and I needed a lot of hints, and the overall polish is lacking a bit.

- Third, as for Cliff Johnson games: I went to his website and discovered that all three games mentioned above are now available for free download, with windows versions (or, more accurately, a bundled emulator) - so no need to worry about emulators. Following this link: Fool's Errand site.

- Fourth, there's a game called "Are we there yet?" which I originally thought was a Cliff Johnson game but it seems was just a game released by the same developers using the Fool's Errand engine - it's not quite as brilliant, but it's still very good. Here's a link to the underdog's entry (their search engine doesn't seem to find it): Underdogs link

Wow... that game is really cool. You can literally turn off your monitor and play this game without any disadvantage of your monitor being off. Wow. After the first few levels I could actually start visualizing the mazes... great stuff. This download is definatley recommended! :D

Highly, highly recommended. I've mentioned this one before, though, Eytan. I played it a few years ago, and it is worth the commitment.

GROW 3 is an interesting puzzle/toy-like thing. You have to figure out in what order you have to place the materials on GROW. Took me a while to figure out.

Also, Enigma (this is another Enigma, not the Oxyd-clone) is a great text-based puzzle game for Unix (no Windows version, but cygwin or a cross-compile might work). It's kinda like boulderdash, except here things fall in three directions. There's different kinds of dirt, one blocks falling objects while another doesn't. Later on you get explosives that break through walls in different ways and instant death squares. Only 12 levels, but they're pretty difficult.

MegaZeux (and its predecessor, ZZT) are classics, though a bit old. They are ingenious uses of ASCII, and not only come with games (usually puzzle, but there are also monsters), but also with game creation for puzzles, monsters, and other types of games.

ZZT was awesome, and hard. MegaZeux too.I recommend these, the graphics are better than you would expect from ASCII, and they're quite well designed and fun. I don't remember which of them I beat, but I definitely conquered one or two of them. If I recall properly there were quite a lot of them, it's been a long time.

Bump.

I found this cool tetris-like game a while ago called Squarez Deluxe (download, screenshot).
Your goal is to form 3x3 squarez on the play area, while blasting bad pieces with bombs and missiles etc.

I loved MegaZeux... I still have it. I can't believe they discontinued it... and now the best we've got is 2.69c or 3.1s, depending on what you use... I'm all sadlike. At least the gaming community is still surviving. www.zeuxworld.net or somesuch is a wonderful site for games. I used to make a few good ones...

While not really a puzzle http://www.sodaplay.com/ is very puzzling and I highly reccomend it. Plus no downloads required. You can create all kinds of wierd 2D things from springs and masses and can add muscles to make them move. It also has a beta version of terrain. which while not working perfectly adds a lot of fun to the game. It also has a great community (check out the forums). People make truly incredible things with it, but it is quite hard.

Ive had this game for a LOOOONG time that isn't all that long if you're an adult and not an 11 year-old, well anyway i had this since i was like 3 or 4 and yeah, its really good. I like the one where you go on those round color thingies with your mouse without your cursor bouncing all over everything, but for some reason I cant beat the labyrinth one.

I actually just finished this now, and it's much more satisfying to figure out the solution on your own, I would suppose. Start by figuring out the last six items, that is, the six items that reach their max level the fastest.
