In my junior AP class, we have read both T. C. Boyle's The Tortilla Curtain and J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye. Both are fabulous novels, and I have an equal preference for both of them. I was wondering what other forumites' opinions were, though, so I decided to start a poll. Feel free to use this thread for discussion of the novels and/or posting links about them.

I love Catcher in the Rye but I had never heard of The Tortilla Curtain until now. From the Wikipedia article it seems like it is very popular in literature classes, but since it came out after I graduated high school that would explain why I hadn't been exposed to it.

Anyway, I don't want to vote when I haven't read half the choices. But I'm wondering if The Tortilla Curtain is really even in the same class as Catcher in the Rye.

I personally think Catcher in the Rye is one of the finest examples of 20th century literature, and considering you have equal preference I'm going to have to read Tortilla Curtain.
