Yeah... full answers should not be disclosed but hints should be shared I believe. That way we avoid exactly the fact that you have the answers and no-one else does. I withdraw but am keen to see the result. The solution could be quite ingenious (hopefully :))

Okay, I guess he isn't coming to post the answer so I'll post it in parts.

First of all, the correct answers to the clues:

Woah. For some reason, when I read that puzzle two weeks ago, I auto-skipped the 'signature' at the bottom of the message. Man, that was stupid.
Anyway, I haven't gotten anything else yet, but I'm looking ;) By the way,

I'll try the reverse approach - hazard an answer first, and then try to tailor the clues to the solution.

The man was a professional jockey. The clues are maybe names of racehorses?

Tahnan's answers, with TripleM's corrections, are all correct.

So you've found the "little" things. Now where would you find the things that are "just a bit smaller"?

I've already been trying all the usual methods, removing one letter and anagramming, etc. Still no luck yet, so I guess I need to think up some other ideas.

No anagramming. Actually, the answers themselves are almost completely irrelevant. Almost.

By deleting a letter to form a new word. Doesn't work so well for "mermaid", or most other words in there. So I've generally got, er, nothing.

Hmm.. to further that idea, what about dropping one or more letters to form new words. Even allowing for "oy" and "jo" (baby kangaroo), still no clue as to who "the man" was. Some seem like they could be clues, but ass and oy don't really fit.

bighorn --> horn
mermaid --> maid
boy --> oy
caesars --> csars
goldenbooks --> gold
people --> pope
saintnick --> saint
woman --> man
death --> eat
britain --> it
boyblue --> blue
friend --> end
rock --> roc
bopeep --> peep
prince --> price
men --> me
richard --> hard
man --> an
john --> jo
rascals --> ass

Let's change that to "Tony's nickname for his weapon in Scarface, perhaps"

Direct

Shady spot
Heresay
Enjoy the taste

I'm not too sure about what level of difficulty this puzzle might be. You guys get to be my test crew.

Hm, I think I'm on the right track, but theres several I can't find any reasonable words which match those definitions. I'm wondering if my definition of 'right track' is too specific, but since I can do about half of them.. hm.
The first letters of the ones I've come up with, if you feel like giving me some confirmation that I'm on the right track, are:
?apl???rs.

[edit]
I've got a few more, so I'm going to guess at a final answer.

Your final answer is wrong, but all of the letters you came up with before the guess were correct.

It might help your guessing if you know that the letters form a two-word answer. Also, I'm willing to accept blame for crummy clues, as I was intentionally making them vague (so one could solve them after the realization). But yeah, you've definately figured out what this puzzle is aboot.

To be honest, I'd gotten a number of the words an only spotted a kind of semi-theme until I read that last post of RoboBob's. And, having gotten the apparent theme, I still can't fill in all the words.

Never heard of 'em, but I'll believe you. (Meanwhile, still can't get two of the last three, even knowing their first letters, but I did find that "Work" could be "endeavor". I did get "response to stimuli" though.)

Yes, Maurog got it, as well as the additional clues. The theme was not just words that could take an optional U, but words with alternate spellings in American and Canadian English. I didn't realize my over-reliance on U-words until you all pointed it out. And I see now that this puzzle could use better flavor text, as well as clues. It's difficult to decide when a clue is vague, but still useful enough.

And my thoughts on the answer:

Maple- Trait on Canadian flag
Bars- Trait on American flag

I thought it might be; though I wasn't per se coming up with them anyway. There's a fine line between "coincidence" and "pattern"; if you happen to use a bunch of "-our" words, well and good, but when it's seven out of nine in a puzzle, it looks like it's the pattern, and not just a happenstance.

Can somebody enlighten me on this one?
How can X possibly be 3.333.. and 5.5 at once?

-Insane

EDIT. I discovered something.

E is the fifth letter of the alphabet, leading to the suspiciousness of 5.5.

Although, it would make more sense if the other were 2.2 for the second vowel.
I still don't get it.
