1000th post! Woohoo!

:yay

(I don't like this smiley much, but there's no "I'm number 2" smiley to use instead of :hooray , for some weird reason ;) )

Gosh, it'll probably be a while before I "catch the fever." It's probably because Game Maker has kind of overtaken my interest in DROD for the time being.

Anyway:

Go Eytan Go Eytan Go! :yay

Go Eytan Go Eytan Go! :yay

Go Eytan Go Eytan Go! :yay

Go Eyt...oh, all right, just hit me. :twak

I am planning to be the first to pass Oneiro ;)

After all, I really *am* advancing a lot faster - I remember that about 3 weeks ago I was 19th place.

Oh - and I have second highest post average (after Oneiro) But hopefully not for much longer! ;)

Number of posts is not a race. It's not a contest. Having more posts per day, or more posts overall only means that you spend more time here on the forum. Next person to brag about their number of posts or posting rate gets reset to zero posts.

Sincerely,
Grumpy Old Man.

- OR -

I could go the exact opposite direction, and add stats like length of posts, average word, sentence, and paragraph length, overall number of characters typed, characters/day, words/day, etc. Give you weirdos something else to compete over. Number of smilies/post. That would be interesting.

Hmmm... First person to give me working code to automatically rate the quality of posts gets their own smilie. Now *THAT* would be fun to see.

Yeah, don't make Schik any grumpier. You will pay dearly! Seriously, post counts are fun, but it doesn't make sense to get caught up in them. Quoting myself, if you'd like to do something to help out DROD...

"Write good posts on the forum. When our boards are populated with well-written messages, whether they be humorous, insightful, imaginative, or informative, it helps to attract new DROD players and increase their level of involvement."

Once again, I've said more than was needed. So I'll shut up now.

I don't think anybody here meant anything by it. Sorry :~( .....

Oh - and I don't think higher stats mean that we spend more time here. I find that just visiting once or twice a day covers everything. After all, there's only so much one can post that's not considered spam.

Don't take me too seriously, The_Red_Hawk. I was a bit frustrated by all the "oh yeah? well I'm going to make more posts than .... " stuff that's been happening more and more lately. The way that people earn my respect around here isn't by having the most posts per day - it's by having well thought out, intelligent posts. Or being funny. Or creating good holds. Or....

In a way, I was saying what Erik said but in a much less positive, friendly way. :)

I *knew* that before posting it, thus the signature and alternative way for me to deal with the situation.

I used to visit a forum with just such a system - you got rated in terms of esteem based on post length, grammar, etc. It tended to result in good posts because one-line posts actually deducted esteem.

If anyone comes from the heady BBS days, they may recognise this system from a BBS game - the forum I was on was its web implementation.

Wow, and you thought I was going to tell you what it was called? Sucker.

Heh. But it looks like you found a way to get out of saying just one line. That BBS sounds obnoxious to me.

BBSs were cool. In some ways, websites are only just catching up to BBSs, and it still doesn't feel the same.

Simple: you decided whether or not you had anything to add to the conversation, and tacked it on the end. Either that or take an esteem hit. You normally got away with a few lines, you just didn't get any esteem for them. Not even worth posting, really.

It was only half a message board - the other half was a diabolical trivia game/MMORPG where all of the player management tools were given to the players. This tended to kickstart wars, but the interesting thing was that none of the tools given were any good at making players go away. Ban them, and they'd just sign up another character. Cripple them (every action you took cost points, and if you took all of someone's points away, they were kicked out until they were replenished) and eventually someone would attack you to get them back into the game. The only real way to stop wars was via diplomacy.

Naturally, diplomacy got savage.

Esteem was required to increase the amount of actions you have - too little and the game would take your points and tell you to socialise instead. Esteem also gave you extra points if you had enough of them and tried to become more powerful. Extremely useful, as it meant you could defray the point costs of doing so.

Anyone recognise it? Erik?

Matt

This thread just got really strange...

As long as we're talking about quality of post methods, what about the slashdot method? People rate each other's posts on usefulness humour, english skills, all rolled in to one number out of 5?

No.
First off, that's not quite how Slashdot works. People with good karma (i.e. with good posts) get 5 Moderator points every once in a while, and get to spend them on 5 different posts. You can mark a post as funny, interesting, troll, informative, etc. Not to mention Meta Moderating...

Second, there's no point in doing that for a site of this size, with such a small user base. It would also be a lot of code to write.

I think all "esteem" systems are quite silly - one should post because he or she has something to say, not because they will get a good grade for it. I know I started this thread, and I know I post a lot in general, but with maybe a handful of exceptions, I've made my posts because I thought I had something to contribute to the discussion/game/beta-test/etc. The same, I believe, goes for Oneiromancer, and also other heavy posters such as Red_Hawk and DiMono. Therefore, I think this is current a healthy forum - and any sort of karma or esteem system will just introduce new problems.

I don't really like the "esteem" thing either. A lot of times I only have one line of stuff to say, like if I am asking a question, answering a yes/no question, or a bunch of other things.

We're not going to do anything like the esteem system any time soon if ever. I'm guessing Matt brought it up because the mechanics are interesting.

Also, speaking for myself, I'm absolutely proud of the people we've got hanging out here. This is an extraordinarily well-developed forum for a small game like DROD, and we talk about all kinds of interesting stuff. I like to think that since I wrote a game that I myself like to play, it naturally attracts people that are fun for me to interact with, because we've got similar brains or something.

Everybody in this thread and on the forum is doing fine, one-line posts or whatever, so I hope nobody is getting worried or upset. It's all cool. Just be yourselves and have fun.

All I really want from you, Hawk...is to please use the quote option once in a while? The problem with being succint is that we need to figure out what you're talking about, and if you use the quotes, which really doesn't take that much time, then it can really help us out. If you're posting directly after the post you're asking about, then it's okay...but if that post has several ideas in it then we can get confused. So, just a suggestion to make things go a bit smoother.

Game on,

That, and I hoped someone had played Pyroto or one of its varients in the past. But I don't think the esteem system really suits a dedicated forum, where the only reason people come is because they like coming, not because they're playing a trivia game and are occasionlly forced to communicate to other players.

I have to agree here (chalk up one for the similar brains theory). On-line forums where the vast majority of people put effort into their posts and are accepting, articulate, passionate and interesting is a rare thing, and the bigger it gets the harder it gets. At some point they either get overrun by spammers or so condescending to newbies or people that don't meet their own lofty standrds of posting (something I'm guilty of occasionally) that it's unpleasant.

So far I've only been involved in two that are a joy to be a regular on, and this is the only one where it's not forced by an esteem system.

*sniff* I love you guys!

Matt

I think I'm guilty of not using quotes more often than Hawk is. Usually I just preface with "nameofposter:" and assume they'll know what I'm talking about, forgetting that other people will be reading the post too. Something else to look out for. I hate being a bad influence on people...
