Stone Golem:

Another nasty, new creature....

Movement: like roach.

Needs 3 blows to be killed. After being hit, Stone Golem is pushed 1 square in direction opposite to Beethro.

(examples: Beethro is facing north, the golem is standing northwest from Beethro.

Bethro moves to west, and his sword hits the golem. The golem slides 1 square to north

Example2: Beethro is facing north, the golem is standing 2 squares to the north from Beethro.

Beethro moves 1n, golem slides 1n. (x3). Golem dies.

I do not like this idea, for a couple of reasons.

What if it can't slide back?

What about in huge numbers?

Also, all death in DROD is instantaneous, or can be easily predicted. There's no stabbing and running without heads.

What if you hit one once or twice and then head away?

I don't like this idea.

This might be good, but I think it needs a lot of refining.

My guess is it's destroyed immediately, or it doesn't moves one turn.

Architect's mistake. :D

The first hit may destroy one golem's arm and head, the second rip off the other arm and the torso, and the third one finish it for good.

Although three hits seems too much, IMO.

Architect's mistake.

Whoa. The only architect's mistake should be making an impossible room. All monsters should be able to be in a room in large numbers, without providing a major problem for the coders/developers/players/whatever. Tedious is okay, but unknowing of how to kill is not.

Besides, the Architect is their own dungeon god. Gods don't often make mistakes. Architect's sadism, perhaps. Architect's mistake? No.

I'm sorry, that's just plain silly. Architects can make good rooms, they can make bad rooms, and they can make rooms which are impossible. The burdeon of testing the room and making sure it works properly is on the architect, not on the game designer. If there's a monster that is always impossible to kill in big groups, then architects shouldn't but big groups of them in. The editor shouldn't prevent them from doing so, but that's a totally different issue.

I'm not arguing about the merits of this particular monster - I don't have a strong opinion about it either way - but I don't think "careless architects may create impossible rooms with it" is a good argument against a monster.

And tedious is not ok. It's bad design. It's not as bad as impossible, but it will lead to negative impressions of the hold in question.

The game designers are not accountable to the architects. Both the designers, and the architects, are accountable to the players. If an architect makes a hold that doesn't please the players, he made a mistake.

How about something that will die *only* if Beethro pushes it into an obstacle or another monster?

Like...a lone wraithwing?

I don't think that this is a good new monster idea.

Yeah.....

But what I mean is something that will move like a roach and will only move back if Beethro hits it with his sword. Maybe it's a little too similar, though.....

Yes, that sounds pretty neat, but that's not exactly the same, is it? It just sounds like a bigger version of the "Splitter."
