Finally a BioShock demo! I finished it in 20 mins, but it was absolutely awesome. The graphics can be compared to Crysis! The story is really interesting, and I can't wait to play the full version! Anyone else played the demo? What did you liked/disliked?

The PC demo is supposedly coming out within the month, though.

I generally don't like FPS games (anymore, that is--I loved Doom and Heretic back in the day)...and to my shame, I haven't played any of the System Shock games...but I will definitely try this demo and who knows, I may even buy it if it seems like enough of a thinking-man's FPS.

Bioshock appears to reward tinkering and clever planning over run-and-gun. There's a video floating around where they do the same room run-and-gun and using environmental traps.

I'm also pretty stoked because it looks like Bioshock's got a point to make and it will use its signature enemies, the Big Daddy and Little Sister, as a case study. I could be reading too much into this but I'd love to see it.

I preordered it (the PC version of course).
System Shock is the DROD of first-person shooters. System Shock II severely lacked innovation. Looks like they are totally redeeming themselves with this title though...

August 21 + about a week for international delivery. I can't wait.

Oh, get some perspective. SS2 was not a shining beacon of innovation, certainly, but it did not "severely lack innovation". Deer Hunter 5 severely lacks innovation. SS2 was just not as innovative as its predecessor was, which makes perfect sense given that it's a sequel to two games - SS1 story-wise, and Thief technology-wise.

Bioshock is really exciting, though. I'll certainly get is as soon as I buy a machine that can handle it (hopefully, not too long from now).

SS2 was the technological successor of Thief. one of the only games besides Thief and Thief 2 to use The Dark Engine which was developed for Thief. Deus Ex followed a couple years after.

So looking forward to Bioshock. If I can get that fist-time-through-Half-Life, jaw-stuck-round-ankles, disappointed-whenever-I-finish-anything feeling back, I'll be happy for another year or two :)

No, sorry, I stand by my previous statement. System Shock II, while a solid game in its own right, compared to the original it is less everything. Less plot, less immersion, less overall depth, less gameplay, less puzzles, no skates! The only thing that has improved is the graphics. I'd pick a complete remake of System Shock on the new engine over System Shock II in a snap.

But we digress...

eytanz' point was that on the innovationometer, SS2 may be a 7 to the original's 10, but 90% of everything else is a 3.

SS2 was one of the best approaches of RPG/FPS elements combination. It was completely awesome, and I'll give it a 6.8/10, I finished it, and I'm proud of. The only negative thing is that there were less puzzles than SS1.

Returning to BIOSHOCK, I just loved the AI of the enemies. How they hided behind a corner, and when I enter the room, >BAM<! A wrench on my head. The Gatherers and Big Daddy are creepy/spooky in a funny way. I love how a little child can drain Adam from dead bodies, and when someone tries to kill her, his "daddy" come to literally destroy the aggressor.

I also liked the minigame for hacking the security, but sincerly it's not that original and I preferred SS2's minigame. I'm looking really forward on this game, and I'll probably buy it the day it's shipped to Italy.

Journey to Rooted Hold is not that original. Oh sure, it has improved graphics and scripted events and suchlike, but the original DROD was such a breath of fresh air that anything after it would just be a pale imitation of playing something new for the first time.

Well, I played the 360 demo, and it was indeed beautiful, and the story was indeed intriguing...and like almost all FPS games since Quake, it did indeed give me nausea and a headache. (For some reason 3D RPGs and the Metroid Prime series don't give me this problem. I think it is the slower pace.) So it seems like I will have to give it a pass. I guess this means I'll have to skip the Half-Life 2 Orange Box as well.

For some reason, the demo contains Securom consumer protection system, making it hard if not impossible to run via Wine (Linux).

See, personally I would have thought that the 'Games for Windows' on the box would have been enough of a sign.

Also: it looks like the Securom stuff is there for troubleshooting, and, if DROD is any judge, because you want to change as little as possible from the full version for the demo.

Bioshock is built on Unreal Engine 3. Epic's games are known for having linux versions right on the install CD or DVD. UE3 is perfectly capable of running on Linux.
Even Id Software, which has a habit of open sourcing their games, and choose only technologies which won't complicate opensourcing the engine later, doesn't support Linux as oficially.

Yes, it's Securom, but for other reasons. People say the demo has Securom because examining the .exe could give crackers an insight into the .exe of full game, making it easier to crack.
(By the way, the demo contains ending videos for the full game - flash)

This doesn't change the fact that 2K don't support it, and there was no sign other than 'Epic likes Linux' that they would. DROD plays on Linux, but then Caravel did the work so it would. 2K don't feel that way.

For what it's worth, Bioshock doesn't run on my machine either. I am not making a big fuss out of it, however, because they were more or less clear about the expectations they had.

I played the full game for a couple hours at my brother's house last night. It's great! I second this endorsement.

I decided that I want this game after all, because the setting and story of the demo intrigued me so much (I'm a sucker for stories set in dystopias), but I don't want to pay $60 (360 version) for a game that will give me headaches. I tried to get it at Circuit City for their $50 promotion but the only one reasonably close was sold out (and they're sold out online as well). Amazon doesn't have any discounts and any other website that might have it for $10 off wouldn't be likely to have free shipping (again, Circuit City has a promotion now...but sold out). So. Anyone know of any special promotions or should I stop being so cheap since I have a real job and I've spend about as much money on far worse games in the past anyway?

Also, Goozex is a good game trading site for unloading past titles to get new ones for cheap or free. Unless you're a game collector and want to keep everything you've ever played. But, heh, then I guess that excludes ever renting anything anyway.

I did say it was the 360 version, which means no Gamefly. My PC isn't near powerful enough to play Bioshock at the same level as my 360 anyway. And I certainly pay lots of money for games...remember the "Pick which game Oneiromancer should play next" thread? That's over 40 games I've bought but never played or finished...not including GBA or DS games. And as for Mike's point, I do like to keep my games, so yeah, I doubt I'll go that route. I was more asking about an online retailer that had a sale. I'm not going to be ultra-cheap, I just want to pay the same as the PC version. :P
