Let's try this:

1. A brutal murderer
2. A victim of a serial killer
3. A sheriff who catches a serial killer

A few clues about the movies should help:

1. Based on a true story, in Kansas - one of the first cases that shocked the U.S. because of the senselessness
2. Based on a true story about the U.S.'s first female serial killer, in Florida

Still too obscure?

Okay, I'd have to guess that the second one is coming from "Monster", but having never seen it, I can't be more informed so I'll just throw out Marc Macaulay?

Woot! I finally found a use for those stupid character pages the IMDb has created. The murder in Kansas was the one chronicled in In Cold Blood, so looking at people who played Dick Hickock (one of the two murderers involved) led me to Scott Wilson, who also played the last "John" in Monster. (I'd gather that the third movie is Clay Pigeons.)

Scott Wilson it is! Sorry if that was too tough, but I had just netflixed Clay Pigeons and really liked the role he played, which led me to look up some of his other roles. He's good in Junebug, too.

I'm out of mod points so I'll have to owe you one.

I don't believe we've done:

1. An evil real estate developer
2. An English teacher
3. An assassin's assistant

(I hope #3 doesn't make it too easy.)

1. It's A Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie
2. (not sure)
3. Grosse Point Blank

OK, so that made it too easy. (The second one is In & Out.)

Good movie. I just couldn't remember what she did in that movie...

OK, new post forthcoming. May take me some time, though.

Not sure about the ambulance chaser, but I'm thinking Ian Holm as:
(2) Father Vito Cornelius from The Fifth Element and
(3) Bilbo Baggins from the Lord of the Rings series

I haven't seen The Sweet Hereafter, but I think he's a lawyer who's trying to encourage wrongful-death lawsuits, so that may be what jbluestein has in mind. (I just saw Garden State the other night, in which he's a reserved New Jersey psychiatrist; it's a very strange role for him. Especially because of the accent.)

I guess it was easier than I thought it would be. (I was going to pick Garden State as my third, but I couldn't come up with a good description for his character.) The Sweet Hereafter is in fact #1.

I think it was the futuristic monk that tipped me off. Cornelius was the first one I thought of and that immediately reminded me of Bilbo. Personally, I would have listed Ash from Alien, but that's me.

Okay, let's try this one:
1. The manager of an extreme sport
2. A Roman god
3. A jilted Soviet agent

Okay, a little hint if you want.

1. The manager of an extreme Roman sport
2. A Roman god often mistaken for a fictional race
3. A jilted Soviet agent whose girlfriend is trying to defect

I may have just made it too easy for a particular member of this forum. Maybe even others.

it's virtually impossible that you don't mean Oliver Reed, since #2 HAS to be Vulcan, whom he played in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, and it's just too coincidental that he was also Proximo in Gladiator, fulfilling #1... but I have insufficient knowledge of the most of the other things he's listed in to identify #3.

Okay, I'm just throwing out a wild guess of Rosalind Chao.

The first botanist that comes to mind is Keiko O'Brien from TNG and DS9, of course in all the movies I've seen her in, I haven't seen her as either of the other two. (Unless you want to count her as a deity in the episode "The Assignment" when Keiko was possessed by a Pah-Wraith, but that's a bit of a stretch. Of course we've definitely had bigger stretches in this game.)

How about Uma Thurman:

She played Venus in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
She played botanists in Batman and Robin (Poison Ivy) and Paycheck.
I can't think of a particular film in which she plays a rocket scientist, but I seem to remember seeing her in that role somewhere... (maybe Gattaca?)

2. A cocaine-addicted pool hustler.
3. An extremely efficient butler.

I've seen all of those and I even have Gattaca, Paycheck, and Batman and Robin (I don't judge your movie collection) at my beck and call.

Okay, I've been busy with the holiday weekend, but I'm going to make a somewhat random guess.

Andre Braugher?

I know he was the main character in Thief and apparently he was a sergeant on Soldier's Girl
