I don't know what to call this post, but.....

Why don't we have a monster that can go between rooms like the 'Neather? Perhaps it will always try to escape from Beethro, just to make the level a bit harder. But, if it's cornered, it would still fight.

Probably it would be a little smarter than a goblin.

Well, a monster that goes between rooms will be too difficult to plan for - remember that the 'neather was scripted, so it could never do anything surprising. On the other hand, a monster that runs away could be a good idea - we could have a monster that tries to escape Beethro like a queen, but unlike a queen, if it reaches the edge it leaves. It would then be possible to construct puzzles where your goal is to let it escape (presumably, once it leaves it no longer counts as a monster in the room).

And if we'd want to have levels which are themed as a "chase" level, it wouldn't be too difficult to fake it by just putting such a monster in every room.

That's a fun idea - there is a potential for interlinking rooms woth a chasing/following theme to be created.

Technically this is right, but really, if a monster leaves the room, and disappears, then it has escaped from Beethro and he is not fulfilling his job contract fully as he cannot track it down and kill it. Just being pedantic. ;)

Which is why I assume most rooms to use this monster will be designed as part of a level where you chase it around. But also, in user-created holds, who tells you that the contract is always the same? I mean, in the Tomb of Nomb, Beethro wasn't even acting on a contract, he was in an freelance Indiana-Jones type expedition, lured by the promise of great riches (or great roaches).

Either it would have to be unkillable, or you would need a way to update the rooms once it had been killed.

You're in luck!

The upcoming DROD features all of the following:

"Torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles..."

(Well, we're still deciding on the true love part...)

It'll be great!
