I was suprised how easy it was to carve that pumpkin. Until this year, I'd never attempted a detailed design, always opting for the single-shaped eyes, crooked mouth, and triangle nose. I bought one of those carving kits that come with all the patterns and saws and hole-punches, and they really are handy. Of course, I printed out a black and white pattern first and taped it on the pumpkin, I don't think I could've done it freehand. You punch small holes along the main lines of your picture, then use a saw to go from hole to hole.
