I just realized what happened: I restored to the checkpoint, not the room start, before starting the demo up. So the one I thought was more complete was actually just my standard room victory demo, despite having more moves in the room. I'll fix that up as soon as I get home on saturday, and upload the correct demo.

Right, here's the correct demo for level 9. Sorry about that mix-up.

I love that list at the start of this thread (particularly because my name is on it). I think that it would be a fun idea to keep updating that list with faster and more efficient demos (in regards to time and moves) and credit to the new record holder, somewhat like a high-score list. That'll keep this challenge kicking long after we conquer every level with demos.

Of course, we'll should still keep a list of who completed which room, no matter how many itmes it's been done. Doing it even once, of course, is quite a feat.

Oh, and I'm not going to be the labor behind this, if anybody decides to do it. I'm just the brains behind this operation. Slash, I'm lazy.

Who is better if, for example, someone posts a new demo with a better time but more moves?

After all, it's a puzzle game.

It shouldn't be too difficult to defeat my level 9 demo, considering I had to leave some rooms and come back to them after messing them up. That's one thing I really liked about level 9 - if you fouled up, you still wouldn't die.

Leaning on the model from the DOOM Honorific Titles as one of the early internet challenges, the first to complete a challenge closed that level for other submissions to meet the same challenge.
The reasoning being, the challenge was in figuring out how to meet those requirements. Once completed and published any further entries are redundant for the specific challenge.

Feel free to open a new challenge:
whole-level demos in least time,
whole-level demos in least moves,
whole-level demos in least room visits,
whole-level demos with most other challenges included

Ranking redundant entries by multiple stats would be interesting and valuable, but order of submission is also a valid ranking criteria. For example, I notice level 7 (along with others) has not been submitted yet, probably because it is a fairly difficult level to complete in one pass. The first to complete it will deserve that recognition. But efficiency is also interesting and of value and to be acknowledged.

I disagree with the previous argument that less moves is better than lower clock time. I would bet few people would be interested in viewing an hour long demo of someone making the theoretically least possible moves, although I'm sure there are at least a couple people who would appreciate it.

There is the issue of race condition on challenge submissions. The clear authority should be when that demo was submitted to this thread in this forum. (e.g. NOT local time demo completed)

But then maybe I'm biased...

levelthirteen,

Nice job documenting the demo stats. How did you get this information?

Perhaps a challenge should be posted for someone to determine the minimum number of room traversals required for each level.

Here is level 7. I didn't find it too hard, but I did get lucky in a few rooms(e.g. 2N2E) and I screwed up the last snake in 3N a few times.

I agree, especially with the 'NOT local time' part. Of course, I'm a biased as one can be with regard to that.

Here is level 7.

Very nice job. I had to chuckle at your near miss on 2N2E

Wow, I had a completely different solution to 2N. When I get done, the only way out is SW or E. Requires extra trips around the 3N path. is attached if anyone cares.

Bravo. I'll try to get level 22 when I have a chance, there are one room each in 17 and 21 that scare me. Actually, they're both Once South Once East. Weird, huh?

And those are the only three we're still missing. Come on folks, we're almost there!

Edit: would you believe I never saw that trap for Once West?

It's java source code that takes a .demo file apart and analyzes its contents. Really good stuff, and he was nice enough to let me steal bits and pieces of it.

Now, who was it who said that level 22 is considered the hardest? On the level descriptions, was it? I wonder if it's a coincidence that it's the last one.

I had plans to do level 22 a while ago, I just haven't had the time to do it. I've actually always found level 22 pretty relaxing, since there's very little you can't afford to take your time on, and it's a pretty forgiving level all things considered.

When I did it, I spent lots of time on every room - probably up to an hour. It was almost impossible to get every mimic to do exactly what I wanted.

I know we can just try to get better times for these, but why don't we also go to architect-made holds and get demos for their levels too?
