That would be Blinded By the Light, originally written and performed by Bruce Springsteen on his first album, but popularized by Mannfred Mann's Earth Band. I'm surprised you didn't quote the part that confuses everyone.

And I knew that Fleetwood Mac one...I was trying to sing it to myself but it just wouldn't come to me...argh, it was so frustrating, but it was also 3 in the morning so it's okay.

It's a pretty obscure more or less one-hit wonder. Go ahead and name the song, Google the artist. Make sure you get the original one though and not a cover.
