I'm purty sure it's some kind of ROM-hack, as I don't think I've ever seen those flowers vertically arranged like that in Super Mario World...

Then again, the game definitely is Super Mario World (hacked or not) or Nintendo would be all over someone's posterior in no time if it was a 1:1 clone... what's the point of asking for some aftermarket modification someone did to the game?

This is quite a well-known ROM hack, renowned for its difficulty - I did say it was obscure! It alters Super Mario World pretty much beyond recognition, so I think it's fair to see if anyone can identify it. Here's another screenshot that's a bit more iconic - if no-one gets it within a day or so the prize will go to Monkey.

Yeah, it's a romhack. I've not played any but seen some at Youtube.

One of the ridiculously hard ones was called 'Kaizo Mario'. It could be this, I think I saw jumping between moving platforms somewhere. If not, I have no clue.

In any case, Monkey or Briareos should probably continue from here.

Yeah, Doom has it. The main reason I thought people might have heard of it is this page (WARNING: obscenity in large quantities). It's a selection of videos of people trying to play it, with audio commentary. They are funny in the same way, and for the same reason, that watching someone take multiple custard pies to the face is funny... :schadenfreude

(Well, maybe there should be a schadenfreude smiley.)

The other possibility was this video, in which 134 playthroughs of the first level are overlaid to illustrate the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. Yes, really.

A cute little gamemaker made puzzle game. Bonus points for a level editor.

(And yeah, characters can be changed by cliking the image in the main menu. A few can be unlocked too)

Well, the monster in the first shot seems to be an imp from Doom and the shell in the second shot seems to be a buzzy beetle from a Mario game. It's also clearly a platformer (hence my original guess of Doom 2D). I have no idea what game they're from, but I feel suddenly compelled to play it...

This is JudgeSpear's Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, previously known as Super Mario Fusion. I think at some distant point this fan game was Super Mario World. But, it's not even out yet, is it?

You are right, it's Mushroom Kingdom Fusion. It is nowhere near completion, but beta v0.2 is available (contains about 15% levels and 4/8 playable characters).
