Nope, not Kirby... Kirby doesn't look like one of those drinking bird things (take a peek at the second screenshot there) ;)

it looked like a blue kirby, and there are probably games where kirby turns diffferent colors

Obviously you play as the spinning crystal thingy, the kirby-like guy and the bird are probably the enemies in this game.

Hee, ok, text-based hint (besides that both the blue kirby guy *and* the bird are the player character. Singular. They are the same character.)... It's a Nintendo first-party game. Yes, you're reading that correctly, *first* party.

:laughs: Yup, that's it...

It's actually a wonderful game. The little dippy-bird thing can suck up all sorts of stuff to carry it around, can fill things with paint to start them moving around... Plus, the game's score system is based around optimization of moves.

Unfortunately, it's one of the wonderful things Nintendo has made that never came out in the US, along with other wonderful little games such as Doshin the Giant. In this case, because the SNES was a dead system stateside when Sutte Hakkun came out.

Oh well, perhaps when the Wii comes out...

I was *about* to say Cool Spot, but... not only would that have been Obvious(TM), but it's not actually the same game anyways.

Bingo. Quite a memorable game. And rather painful in difficulty. For me anyways. I speak. In broken sentences.

Umm... I was thinking people around here would know a *first-party* Nintendo puzzle game built around optimization? ;)

Wow, um... You've got a beta infestation on your keyboard there. ;)

That looks more like the German 'sharp S' (Eszett, I think, ß) than the Greek Beta (which would be β in Unicode). The mathematical beta seems to be another different character, but I can't read that one.

Nin... ten... duh?

(All Nintendo I've ever owned was a SNES and a few games, none of which were Japanese imports... :lol)

Not to worry - all it takes is shooting a few heavy gamma rays at the keyboard, and it's okay; see? :spamlaser

(Also - β ≠ ß, the latter is what you get on a German keyboard if you try to do a question mark sans shift key...)

:laughs again: OK, so I'm a geek. Big deal ;)

I didn't know that about the characters. Never took German in high school or anything ^^;; And I think the mathematical beta *might* just be the lower-case Greek one.

All I know is that Unicode has a different character and a bunch of variations, but I haven't ever seen one on a computer, and they seem to be fairly recent. The standard also specifies the Greek letter as being an approximate equivalent, though.

The Unicode math symbols are called "mathematical bold/italic small/capital beta" among others. Their values are... Okay. Who said "geek" again?

:looks it up: Whoooooa. *none* of the fonts I have on my computer actually have the mathematical beta characters in them (or any of the mathematical greek letters at all, for that matter)... Tweaky.

In any case, I've learned that German has a character that looks kinda like a Greek beta. Woo!

Way way off topic: Here is a type designer who explains why he didn't use the same shapes for Greek text and "Greek" symbols in Math or IPA: Greek letters used in Greek text should look Greek, and Greek letters used in Roman text should look Roman. Scroll down to the second illustration for examples from his font.

And it gets wooer.

That letter started out as a ligature of a long and a short s. Long eff if the letter that lookf like an f without the horizontal bar; you may have come acroff thif in older Englifh textf af well.

There is no capital eszett.

The name "eszett" actually means "s-z" (rather than "s-s" or "double s"), but that is less because of Roland Barthes or because SS has all the wrong connotations, and more because the "short" s in the ligature evolved into something that looked more like a z.

In some contexts German double esses are written as "ss", in others as the ligature. There are rules on when to use which, but I'm excused from knowing them: I'm Swiss, and around here we don't use the eszett at all. That's probably not because we like to keep things simpler than the Germans (ha!) but because we ran out of typewriter keys after putting in all the French and Italian accents.

End of typogrant. Quick, Maurog, a screenshot before we go even further off topic!

As far as I know, the rule is "Es-zett after short vowel sounds, doppel-s (ss) after long."

They changed pretty recently (a couple of years) to this structure, to make it easier to remember.

Well the only game I can think of with that shatter effect would be one of the Final Fantasy series... don't recognise the character tho, and only played 6, 7 and 9.

Not at all (I think). Final Fantasy is all 3D-ish. For the anime style I'd say some "Tales of" game, but I haven't played them all so I don't know that.

But I think it's a japanese RPG.

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment ^^

Yay for Shin Megami Tensei games (even if the Persona sub-series to date has been mucked up badly in the US).

Is it bad that I had it off the first one but checked the second for confirmation?

Yes. Yes, it's very bad, because now we're going to get another import game, which nobody has played.

Kidding.
