Well then. The previous game was Shmup 1 by Berbank Green (you may have come across his FleaFall).
I heard about this on the Indie Superstar webcasts, which (and this is the Caravel connection) are mentioned in the contents description of the Journey's End CD.

And now for a completely different timewaster. I couldn't get usable screenshots from my installation, so here's a shot from teh intarweb.

FWIW, SMAC was probably the worst of them for teh micro; that and the incredibly weak AI really crippled it with such an amazing setting. Civ 4 successfully did away with much of it.

I don't know but I've been told, Diedre's got a network node. Even if she does pronounce her name in a bizarre American manner.
