The game is called: Gribbly's Day Out.

Both games were programmed by Andrew Braybrook.

Well, it certainly looks like Final Fantasy Adventure (or Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden in Japan, or Mystic Quest in Europe) but it probably isn't because you said it was tricky. Might be some sort of fangame using the same engine, I dunno.

Game Name: Final Fantasy Adventure
Series: Seiken Densetsu 1 (Secret of Mana 1)

Now for some trivia knowledge:
Final Fantasy Adventure(GB) is Seiken Densetsu 1
Secret of Mana(SNES) is Seiken Densetsu 2
Seiken Densetsu 3(SNES) was never released in the US, but you can find a copy that has been translated somewhere on the Internet. Of course, providing that information is illegal.
