Looks a lot like a Tohou game, although it could be any number of shmups.

I was going to wait for a more precise answer, but this is correct. It is indeed a Touhou game. Imperishable Night, to be exact. The extra stage, to be even more exact.

Xenogears was a great game! I pumped a zillion hours into that game, only to suffer a memory card malfunction right near the end. I never went back to beat it, unfortunately.

God Hand!

Good lord that game was awesome, although a lot of reviewers didn't seem to care for it, and from what I gather it was for the same reasons that I loved it.

I never did find the "scenes of explicit violence and gore" promised in the pre-game warning though.

Yes, that's God Hand. I haven't played it myself, but it looks like a worthwhile game.

God Hand is an excellent game. If you, like me, never expect to play God Hand yourself (for instance if you don't have a PS2/3), I can recommend the Let's Play of God Hand.

I have trouble agreeing that God Hand is an excellent game. It's not that it isn't, it's that it is by being intentionally terrible in many respects, although it still delivers where it counts.
