How about you have the option to put special challenges in the levels that would be totalled up in a percentage in the same fashion secrets are. For example, the dialogue clues in King Dugan's Dungeon 2.0 and Journey to Rooted Hold (they are most likely in the Smitemaster's selection as well, but with no downloadable version, I have not played these).

That would be interesting, but how would they be shown/made in the editor? Would there be some scripting command?

It'd have to be something like scripting. There's obviously potential in the current scripting engine (Beethro's KDD2 comments a la "I could've done that without..."), but you could turn that into a specific challenge description method of some sort and add things like "Fail challenge if sword not North".

The tough bit would be to find a workable set of descriptors which let you describe most/all of the potential challenges people might think of.

What he did was had a set of stairs behind a green door with a scroll describing the challenge, and you can start the challenge from there, and it is classed as a secret room.

You can already mimic this quite well with scripting and secret rooms. The only thing is that there really isn't a way to distinguish between these "challenges" and other secret rooms.

If the challenge system were implemented well, it could also add additional layers of scoring to rooms. Specifically I'm thinking of Jacob's rooms here where sometimes passing through the room is complex, but eventually clearing it is trivial. (And also of holds like MetDROiD AE and the Death to Death contest hold where there are many unclearable rooms)

If you could have rooms scripted to take scores for things like 'red door dropped, then exited', or 'entered through A and left through B' you could get some interesting competition on the more elaborate non-clearing passes of the room.

Of course, I imagine this would require a huge programming outlay, but maybe in the distant future.

How about we make it simple, and just put a command in scripted characters for 'Challenge Complete', then we can just use the if statements we already have to toy with it?
