A very interesting point to consider, actually.
I pointed out MGS4 in my analysis becuase that was probably the hottest PS3 game announced/shown, and the one that was BEST shown (leave it to Kojima to offer an awesome build-up to get excitment going - after not one but
two jokes with the same characters (TGS (i think) - the "
Sparkle Raiden"
video - and SSBBrawl).
However, I'm also looking at my PS2 games collection... And honestly, I think that it's critical advantage in this generation has been the Long Tail - offering more obscure and lesser-known titles (Disgaea,
tons of RPGs in general, I'd even consider Ratchet & Clank to be a little more niche, etc. etc.). If Sony can keep that bandwagon rolling for this generation, the PS3 will come out at an advantage most likely, although the X-Box360 and Wii are both emphasizing Long Tail with Virtual Console and X-Box Live, irrespectively (I'm tired of respectively for tonight okay?). Imagine if Nippon Ichi software had released all their games for Gamecube. And Square-Enix's Tri-Ace division (Star Ocean 3, Radiata Stories). And Atlus in general. And blah blah blah you get the idea.
In short, Sony's advantage was the third parties in the last generations (with certain exceptions - Jak and Ratchet being the biggest ones in my opinion), and if microsoft can get to a million 360s sold - or possibly worse, the Wii comes out and hits the ground running and Nintendo keeps stocks up enough to avoid the fiasco the 360 suffered and the PS3 might (given the advanced parts involved in those Blu-Ray drives) - Sony could easily lose that, leaving them to early adopters of the Blu-Ray format - and even DVD took time to get rolling.
We'll see, though, we'll see.
