I need a primer in basic Slayer behavior. What causes him to lose the trail? How do I keep him away from me long enough to trigger the switch behind the maze?

Remember, you can click on orbs in-game to see what doors they open.

Game on,

This forum works great! As soon as I post a stupid question, I see the other entrance, or something equally crass.

Thanks for your help!

I have a problem entering from the south, because from Once South, Once East, there is a blue door blocking the passage, because, and this probably sunds pretty stupid, but I can't figure out how to get into Once West; the only entrance is from a passage that appears to lead off the map.. How the hell do I get into it?

Edit: Oh, I didn't see Halph there. Idiot.

Entering from the South brings the "nasty old man" right down you me. I can't go up the n/s passage once the yellow bar is raised as then he come down to kill me. I have tried entering from the west and making a long trail, which I can cause him to stop on most times. But entering the passageway to the orb to get the potion and hitting the orb brings the slayer right down the one square passage to me.

Is there some why to cause him to pause longer so that I have enough time to exit the passageway?

Thank you :thumbsup

I originally went to the south entrance but ran into the slayer several times and couldn't seem to get past him. Then, after seeing your suggestion I did manage to get past. I must have, previously, turned too much before going up the passage.

:rolleyes

It's intended.

It could be a nice challenge, but it's not poosible to clear this room from the west.

No, it's quite possible to complete this room from the west. It does, however, require a greater mastery of Slayer manipulation.

How do you get the slayer to stay out the corridor?
Or can you "push" the slayer back?

Happen to have a demo for this? I've tried this for a while, but can't get the wisp to get long enough.

Got it, forgot about the slayer being able to kill without the hook.

Incidentally, is it possible to do it with the slayer alive?

Pity that Beethro's invisibility potion is ineffective inside a 5x5 square-radius... otherwise I'd stab that Slayer in the back! ;)

This is one of the challenges we're thinking of implementing in the 5.0 update of Journey to Rooted Hold. However, before we can do that, we need confirmation that it is really possible. I've attached a screenshot showing my best attempt at the "long wisp" method (and a sneak preview of what this room will look like in the update); unfortunately the wisp always stays one tile in from the walls, and I see no way to use the 2-wide southern corridor, as the Slayer will always shortcut if the wisp goes adjacent to itself. This comes 10 turns short of allowing Beethro to escape, and once the Slayer enters the 1-wide path, I can push him back to the entrance of the path but no further. Another plausible idea is to start the Slayer just above the door north of the staircase, but that only increases the maximum length of the wisp by about two turns. So... I give up on this one :(

Wasn't this a kind of trick of killing the slayer around the arrows?

I don't remember succeeding this, but I can remember trying this.

So I'm playing through the 5.0 remake and entered from the West and completed this challenge. Is there a reason the challenge script was not awarded? Shouldn't it have been triggered? I've attached a demo. I haven't had any other problems with challenges not being awarded. I even

Seems like this challenge isn't actually implemented. It doesn't show up in the restore screen list.

Thanks for the reply! Interesting. I assumed that it had been scripted because of the scroll. I hadn't bothered to look through the challenges in the restore screen to see if this room showed up now that I've seen the room & challenge scroll. I guess this one was just for fun, although I don't see that it would be that difficult to script. Presumably you could just do an if command to check if the player is in the south entrance on the first turn and have the challenge fail.

Clarification:

Two weeks ago, JtRH 5.0 was made available to chat members as a limited release, for final testing before we announced the release on the forum. One bug that was noticed was that this, along with two other challenges, was not implemented. (There's a complicated story behind that, which I won't go into now.) This has now been fixed, and these challenges are implemented in the final release.

The final decision for this room was to award the challenge "Escapology" if you enter from the west or north and reach the stairs, regardless of whether you do it with or without killing the Slayer.
