This is probably later notice than it should be, but..it can't hurt to at least mention it, right?

All throughout the development of Entry Point/The Descent of King Hesper, I avoided actually playing the hold proper. I mean--obviously I played my own contributions in the form of testing-while-building them and such, but that's a very small fragment of the overall project.

The truth is that, all along, I've rather wanted to experience the whole thing for myself once complete. And also had the half-idea of "reviving" my Saturday DROD-playing streams in the form of going through the hold.

Well, it released at a time when I was pretty busy irl, so I've avoided playing it or reading much in the way of real specifics. And, this is the first Saturday I can possibly try to do that. So...drop by if you want. Or check out the recording later. Maybe the first couple of hours will be boring anyway.

It'll be here, sometime around Local Time:05-31-2025 at 08:00 PM (I don't really want to engage my OCD by setting an exact time, so I may start a little bit later or earlier. It's mostly "once my chores are done."): https://youtube.com/live/xrWkrlKhWGI

...and, I may try to get a youtube channel working for me again so that I can upload some slightly edited, chopped-up-to-be-more-digestible version of the recording of this stream. We'll see.

Alright, yesterday's stream went pretty well! I've got it archived on twitch for now; getting a youtube account that's functional is going to require more effort from me, not to mention the editing, so if I decide to do that it'll take a bit of time...

But anyway, I'm planning to keep doing this on Saturdays, around the same time/localtime. So, the date in the first post will be wrong now, but the time should be correct. Definitely going to do it next Saturday, at least.

As for details of what happened, I got through the main meat of the prologue, then went back to try and do cleanup, and was eventually (with some help) able to get all the secret rooms, plus...something else. You know what I mean if you've played the hold, probably.
Considering how rusty I am at actually playing DROD puzzles, this was a really great warmup for my "how does this game work again?" and "basic observational" skills. The rooms were all quite good at showing/reminding me how things worked; the challenges were pretty tough even for these starter rooms; nothing felt like it took "longer" than it needed to to make its point. I think the word I want here is "focused": My hindsighted impression a day or so later is that rooms largely have a central thing they want the player to do, and focus on that thing. I don't believe this is the only valid way to make a good room, but it's a fairly reliable one, at least.
I do want to point out that I find none of this all too surprising; that is, with all the time and effort of people more skilled than me that went in, it's nothing less than what I'd expect. But it's no less good for it.

Just to note: Last week I did some of chapter 1, and today I'm planning to continue. Also wanted to say, I probably won't make a post here for every single stream; primarily I'll intend to post for when I have something to say, or to announce if I won't be doing a stream on a particular week. I also may make a post when I finish a chapter, or other major milestones like that.

Okay, today's stream "completed" chapter 1, aside from some rooms I couldn't figure out and will have to clean up later. But I at least (probably) know where everything is now. And I did my first chapter-2 level.

This post is mostly for a heads-up that I won't stream next Saturday in particular. I should be back the Saturday after that.

Sorry I missed the last stream; I've been very unwell lately and was resting. Could have helped with the secret room hunt ;)

To quickly answer some questions you asked: in HoA 1N1E, entering the maze was always the intended solution. We didn't discover that the challenge was possible until years after the level was finished. I:AGJ 3N and 5N are the only remaining vestige of the original plan for the level -- all the rooms past the tutorial rooms were in pairs. We weren't happy with a lot of the rooms, so in the end blorx replaced a lot of them with completely new ones, and the pairing scheme was abandoned.

Looking forward to more! :thumbsup

Okay, so,

I kind of said something about this near the end of the last stream, but basically, Twitch announced that they'd be arbitrarily deleting a lot of archived "highlights" (essentially, videos). I'm not happy about this, but it is well within their rights. It means a lot of my old archived streams would disappear from there.

This prompts me, personally, to want to go somewhere else. Somewhere that will probably be able to keep my archive around, after I do the work to move it over. Somewhere like...ugh...youtube.

So. Today I'm going to try doing the stream on youtube. We'll see how it goes. I can hop back over to twitch if it seems to just not be working at all.

Here is a link to where it will be today (I'll also edit it into the first post): https://youtube.com/live/TpcnXWOMrAo

Okay, youtube streaming works okay enough, and they haven't started arbitrarily deleting my uploads or streams as of now, so I'm sticking with it for today. I updated the link in the first post, and will continue to do so. Also, since Twitch destroyed and wouldn't let me preserve the stream from the week before last, I'm uploading it to youtube myself. I'm slowly trying to get everything that was archived on twitch shoved over into youtube, so if you subscribed to my channel for some reason...sorry for the spam. I'm at least going to put the Descent of King Hesper videos into their own playlist, and hope to do the same for all the other old series once they're actually transferred over.

That being said, because of some travel I have planned, I expect to not stream next Saturday, but to be back the week after.

A small follow-up to today's stream:

To catch anyone up/remind them, I ended after trying to proceed south through a particular room caused DROD to instantly crash (the "instant-quit-to-desktop, no-error-message-shown" kind of crash). It happened twice, and seemed very consistent; I assumed the direction I was going was trying to cause a scripted level-change, and that somehow that was responsible.

So, after the stream, I tried opening my beta 5.2 installation just to see if it still crashed. It didn't, and the room border I'd been trying to cross wasn't even anything special like that at all! Then I went back to my 5.1 install, restored to before going south...and it suddenly works fine there too! I went back and forth with no issue whatsoever, now.

I guess, in conclusion, the crash was just DROD telling me it was time to finish up for the day. I dunno. It's worth mentioning that my 5.1 install is probably a little bit broken, maybe as a symptom of how I forced it to exist in parallel with the 5.2 version I have, and tends to give out error beeps at random times without putting anything in the error log.

The room in question, if you are curious, was

If you're not on 5.1.1.624, a certain game effect can cause crashes.

Also yeah running both 5.1 and 5.2 off of the same data files can get a little beepy in 5.1. Most of the time it's due to the changes made for serialising keybindings.

You had fuses burning both times it crashed on stream, so it was almost certainly this bug, fixed in 5.1.1.624.

Okay, I've moved house, swapped computers, installed the above bugfix. Things are looking good to stream tomorrow at the usual time, at this link: https://youtube.com/live/am3KYHvabbk

During yesterday's stream, there was some kind of bug happening with the room-lock feature. It seemed like the lock stopped working despite the display still saying that the room was locked, possibly after some amount of undoing, dying, and/or restarting back to checkpoints. Worse still, if I pressed the "lock the room" button in that state, the lock indicator would disappear and now the game acted like the room was locked!

Very strange, but I haven't managed to reproduce it. You can see it happen around this timestamp: https://youtu.be/am3KYHvabbk?t=6539

There's a bug thread bouncing around for that issue but knowing that once it occurs hitting the lock key relocks the room without the indicator is using information.
