I decided to let my 4 year old play DROD today. It's an exercise in patience, for sure! 1200 moves in KDD L1:1N1W, and he had quite a bit of trouble with 3N2W (the first roach).

He's able to read the scrolls, but some of the words are too hard for him. I'm having fun. I think he is too. Might be a while before we try anything harder, though.

I think I'm going to update on his progress here. There's something about first playthroughs that's special.

Level 1:
Moves: 8449
Kills: 256
Deaths: 37
Time: 2:31:43

I adjusted the repeat rate because he was having trouble accidentally holding keys down for too long. He made me set it as low as possible (it was painful), and we eventually compromised on something that wasn't awful for either of us.

I'm not a parent, but if I was, I'd try to be responsible.

So, how he's handling all the blood.

Well, he and his brother have now started pretending to be roaches and eating each other. So... par for the course?

I think especially in today's generations, most kids are good enough at telling fiction from reality, so they know the bloodshed is cartoony/unrealistic - most kids nowadays play video games much more violent than DROD with actually realistic violence, like Call of Duty, but they know it's not actually real.

We have level 2 complete!

Moves: 14406
Kills: 1746
Deaths: 65
Time: 6:09:48

I gave a few hints here. 1S1W was quite tricky for him - and he had a hard time with the first few roach queens he encountered. But he did it!

For good tutorial holds, I would recommend not only the built in tutorial that comes with the game since 2.0 above, but also the Elementary Dungeon hold if he has TSS installed, which covers every element that the official DROD canon has ever, including custom TSS elements like Temporal Aumtliches or Flowers from the Flower Bed, in an absolute beginner friendly manner.

Now, level 3 is complete!

Moves: 32928
Kills: 2987
Deaths: 73
Time: 14:49:48

I did not expect how difficult this level was. Level 4 has a bunch of trickier rooms, so it will probably take even longer, but getting stuck on the force arrow maze was a surprise. It took a long time, and a while bunch of progressive hints (try going further south. No, further. Stay south for longer.)

DROD has definitely captivated him - not that I'm surprised! ;)

Well, I guess that one possible whiteboard on the TSS exit screen was right. DROD is "fun for the whole family, if you're crazy!"

If I may recommend a hold made specifically for a 5 year old by Nuntar and Me, Island of Adventure: http://forum.caravelgames.com/viewtopic.php?TopicID=42270

Though if your kid managed to go through Level 2 of KDD this might be tad too easy.

LOL!

Island of Adventure is really neat, but yeah it definitely is a lot easier than KDD level 2.
