GatEB Steam: No sound for Mac (+1)

I mentioned this in another thread, but GatEB has no sound in the Steam version. The Steam RPG thread mentions that it's due to an issue with the SDL2 libraries. Is there any news about this? Is there any likelihood that this will ever be addressed by the company that works on SDL? Eh, I guess I could try e-mailing them. Then I'll edit if and when I hear back.

But in the meantime, without having any working sound whatsoever, I'm confused as to why the Mac versions of RPG and GatEB are being sold on Steam, to be quite honest.

Edit: I heard back. That was quick. Here is their response:

"You should be able to use the latest SDL in mercurial to fix this [issue]. We're working on a 2.0.5 official release with this fixed."

Thanks for asking the SDL team about this. Glad they have a fix slated. I would prefer we use the official 2.0.5 release, but we can try a development build of SDL2 on OS X if that's what everyone really wants...

I, for one, would love that. Or perhaps you could set up (for both RPG and GatEB) a Beta option for those interested? Just a thought.

A beta version sounds great to me. Even if it needs some hacking to run, it beats booting to Windows to play with sound :-) (And most Mac users who have bought the game probably don't have Boot Camp.)

Thanks for your patience. I downloaded, built and linked SDL2 2.0.5 into GatEB. I've uploaded it to Steam. Would you please confirm that sound now works?

I should make a general note that building with SDL2 2.0.5 now requires OS X version 10.6 or greater instead of 10.5.

It's still not working. Tried deleting and then reinstalling GatEB, restarting Steam, too…but no luck.
(Using OS X 10.8.5.)

On my computer, there is no error message, but no sound plays. This is for both GatEB and the RPG game.

Oh! That's not what I expected at all. That's quite helpful. It gives me a new line of investigation to pursue. This makes the current issue appear like a linker error rather than a library incompatibility. Although, once the linker error is resolved, it'q possible the previous issue will pop back up again. Hopefully not.

I'll keep you posted on any new details.

Sorry for the long wait. I haven't gotten to investigating this issue yet. We're preparing the SmS DLC releases for this and next week, and once those are out, I can investigate this.

I only use the regular game, not the steam version, and the sound works fine on Mac. Maybe stick with that until Mike comes back.

Three years now...and I couldn’t agree with this more. Though it seems fixing it might not be an option, or at least not worth sinking a lot of time into attempting to fix because there are so very few Mac users and it’s simply not worth the cost. But yes, if the Mac version isn’t working, then don’t have the Mac logo showing on the Steam store pages of any applicable DROD games (which I’m pretty sure is all of them).

I believe I have a fix for this.

First, to recap:

1) Buy the Mac version of DROD: GatEB from Steam.
2) Play it. Lament that there is no sound.
3) Head to ~/Library/Application Support/Caravel/drod-5_0.
4) Open up drod.err in TextEdit. You should see the following:

SDL_Mixer Error: Failed loading libvorbisfile.dylib: dlopen(libvorbisfile.dylib, 6): image not found
Assertion error in line 715 of ../../DROD/DrodSound.cpp: "!"CDrodSound::LoadSong(): Failed to open stream.""

If you do, then you've got the problem that the following steps should solve:

1) Close DROD: GatEB if it's currently running.
2) Head to /Applications/Utilities.
3) Open Terminal.app.
4) In the screen that appears, copy and paste this line, then hit Enter to run it:

ln -s ~/Library/Application\ Support/Steam/steamapps/common/DROD\ Gunthro\ and\ the\ Epic\ Blunder/DROD.app/Contents/Frameworks/libvorbisfile.3.dylib /usr/local/lib/libvorbisfile.dylib

After you've hit Enter, reopen DROD: GatEB. You should now have sound.

TECHNICAL EXPLANATION: So, why does this work? Based on the error message above, the sound-playing code is not able to load the sound-playing library called libvorbisfile.dylib. But, this library DOES exist in the downloaded DROD.app. Unfortunately, the code isn't looking in the right place for it. The above command is a fancy-smancy way of creating a Mac alias (or a Windows shortcut) at a lower level - "ln -s [source] [target]" means "create a symbolic link (or alias, or shortcut) from the source location to the target location". So, we're creating a alias for the included (source) libvorbisfile.dylib to the (target) location where the code is looking for it (which is, here, the system level library location of /usr/local/lib, a location you normally wouldn't see in your Finder).

Let me know if:

a) you have any problems running the above command.
b) you ran the above command, but you still don't have sound.
c) you ran the above command, and it worked (yay! the more confirmations, the better).
