I've just entered the Ice Giant's throne room and gone through the tiresome sequence of blocking his attacks... before dying instantly once he starts casting the fireball and you only have few seconds to figure out your next move...

...Every time you die, you need to go through the sequence again, which, frankly speaking, becomes extremely annoying very quickly... cursed be the games that force you into such grind-loop...

..neither is there any hints as to what I should do once he starts casting the huge fireball above his head. I can't move and I've tried everything else I could think of... attacking him, interrupting the spell, defending against the spell, cooling the fire... you name it..

Any hints? PS. I'm a rogue.

I'm having a problem in the same place as a sorc' - the magical duel seems to just repeat itself ad infinitum? I suspect I'm supposed to have an item of some sort to reflect the freezing ray perhaps? I've run through the entire sequence twice with no differences - always the same spells in the same order, not really sure what I'm doing wrong.

Edit: Cheating in the match opens up another short series of options, but now I'm just getting burned to a crisp like you

The sorc' has a magic duel - which seems to repeat. This can be skipped if you dazzle the giant with fire, throw up a shadow avatar, and dash behind a pillar - is there some way in which a fighter/rogue could do some approximation of that ie. dazzle him/daze him and then make a run, maybe clicking on a pillar or something?

Well, I only finished the game as a sorceress, and you seem to have already figured that out. I don't know anything about other classes.

Nah, afraid I'm not smart enough to have figured it out. Can "complete" the mage battle until it cycles through again...but that doesn't do anything. Dazzling him then using the shadow copy to distract from that first fire attack works; but then I get engulfed by the flames behind the pillar. Tried all the spells and nothing works - figured maybe I needed to use my fire spell for some kind of limited immunity to heat (like that when you stick your hand into the fireplace in the guildhall) but that just crashes the game. So yea, any hints would be awesome.

Actually, you get a hint about what to do at a certain point earlier in the game

Hmmm, that doesn't work for me - she aims the winds at him instead of his fire (and it has no effect while his rune shield is up). Which means I've got to work out how to throw a Disrupt sometime earlier in the battle, just not sure when.

Enter the room, throw up a fire and he's dazzled...disrupt then and he insta-casts the fire attack...disrupt behind the pillar and he insta-casts the fire attack again. Earlier I guess? Running through the alternative mage duel seems like a waste of time - no point during it do you get a chance to cast disrupt that I've noticed?

Brilliant, figured out where I was being an idiot. Where you cast Disrupt I went with Channel, which also worked but had the rather noticeable effect of doing sweet nothing to his magical protections at the same time. Didn't even consider using Disrupt, my mana was at 0 and I figured Channel had been turned off too - just goes to show what they say about assumptions is true.

Thanks for the breakdown there, saved me a lot of banging my head against the desk.

Here's what happened with a rogue:

I proceeded in the scripted fight to the point where I can backstab the icy bastard. He survives the strike, comments "bla bla how dare you attack me", moves in for a fight at the centre of the screen.. and a moment after a massive sword would manifest in his hands, his whole avatar would just disappear (as through a bug, rather than through an invisibility spell etc.), and my character would remain stuck in the hourglass mode for a second or two before a fireball out of nowhere from the right side would burn me to ashes..

Am I facing a bug or is this exactly what it's supposed to look like ?

So what are you actually supposed to do as a Rogue? I'm also having problems when he starts his first fireball.

I'm a rogue, and I'm getting killed in exactly the same way. Backstabbing him seems like a good thing to do, but then he disappears and I get killed.

I don't believe it's crucial to game's completion, but because it sounds like this battle is bugged when using a normal dagger that I am suggesting trying to find a second item so you can get to end game. I'm afraid I don't know exactly how to get that item as I didn't test the rogue class extensively myself, but it is near a character which was hidden away (you may have found him in your travels).

Nope, you have seen the person. You just need to put two and two together because you would also have seen something very dangerous near him when you saw the character.
