Symphonic metal eh? I have never heard of them and it's hard to find anything with a common name like that so is there a sample link so I could hear what it sounds like?

It's a genre. I think Within Temptation and Nightwish would be the more notable artists.

Well, I'd say the old nightwish would be better characterized as Opera Symphonic Metal (In my humble opinion), but I'd add Rhapsody of Fire (especially starting from the Symphony of the Enchanted Lands album) as a good example, as their sound is much more orchestral than Within Temptation or Nightwish.

I was more referring to the more popular bands that he might have heard of. But yeah, most bands that do symphonic metal don't really stick to any one metal subgenre.

I am not big fan of nowadays music. I prefer songs from 80s, 90s and early '2000?'.

Also video game music. So much! Nobuo Uematsu, all the way!

Thanks. My question was tongue-in-cheek of course. But try searching for "car band" or "car group" and you don't get much besides things related to automobiles... "Ric Ocasek" will help me get a sample.

Though like Architest, I'm more of a video game music fan. Especially re-orchestrated music. Yup, Nobuo Uematsu or Koji Kondo.

Actually, Nightwish and Within Temptation are symphonic rock. Rhapsody of Fire is symphonic metal.

Nightiwsh is definitively metal. Even if not talking about the strict genre specifications, Nightwish has heavy sound, with lots of overdriven guitars and typical for metal drums. Growling often appearing in their songs is also a domain of metal music rather than rock, so I won't stand corrected.

Plus, wikipedia seems to agree on this one with me.

Plus 2: compare music of bands like Suede or I Am Kloot with Nightwish, you can clearly hear the difference, even if you ignore the "symphonic" part of Nightwish. They have much softer, not as strong, heavy sound.

Well, my friends always call them rock, and when I thought about it, I was thinking of their softer stuff. I guess you're right. But the whole Wikipedia thing doesn't work because Wikipedia is notorious for pulling music genres out of thin air.

Never had a problem with that. The only problem I know is that Machinae Supremacy is self-called Sid Metal (or was it sid hard rock?), but Wiki refuses to accept this as a valid genre name ;).

Perhaps they are obscure genres. I haven't heard of them but that isn't surprising since I don't keep up with modern culture all that much.

Anyway, I wasn't just referring to you, and not in that way. Since it seems I need to spell it out, I was referring to the confusion over the genre.

Really, if you're going to share music likes you should provide some links for others to check it out.

My main love is hardcore (or rave for the Americans). Currently, the breakbeat hardcore sound does it for me - there aren't many examples on the net but here are a few as a taster:

Let Me Be Your Fantasy [Darwin's Arena Space 5 Mix] - Baby D
Wasteland [Deeper Territory Remix] - Peacemaker Feat. Lucia Holm
Y Don't U - Darwin

This is more liquid DnB but a very good tune from an extremely talented young artist:

Tears In Rain - Stan SB

If I'm after something more relaxing, I tend to listen to artists such as this:

Dayvan Cowboy - Boards of Canada
Hi Scores - Boards of Canada
Photosynthesis - Carbon Based Lifeforms
Euphotic - Carbon Based Lifeforms
Frog - Carbon Based Lifeforms
In All The Wrong Places - Ulrich Schnauss
A Strangely Isolated Place - Ulrich Schnauss

Obviously won't be to everyone's tastes but at least gives you an idea of the kind of music I listen to

I think I have definitely made it clear before that my favorite group is the Beatles. I am definitely a fan of 1960s music overall, as well as late 50s particularly the rock and the folk from that era. I could probably go into a long list of what else I like.

Some of my oft-listened songs include:

Requiem For A Dream music video.
Mona Lisa Overdrive.
Saeed.
Sea Tides.
Nice Guys.
Highwayman. (Actually, I much prefer this version.)
Ending music to the Apollo 13 film.

As you can see, I like many things.

Apologies for necrobumping, but anyway...

I like all music from the 1960s to the 1990s, but 70s and 80s most prominently. I can hardly choose between all the bands from those eras, but if I had to pick only two I would go with "Huey Lewis and the News" (The Power of Love, Heart and Soul, and If This is It), and "Hall and Oates" (You Make My Dreams Come True, Your Kiss Is On My List, Rich Girl, and even She's Gone).

Oh yeah, and since when I say all the decades, I mean it, I even am head over heels for some folk and country songs too: My best folk song would be "American Pie" by Don McLean, and country would be a tie between "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and "Margaritaville" by Jimmy Buffet.
