In chapter 4, I have the grass for the apprentice but the blacksmith never left his shop. I tried leaving and coming back several times, and left the town to do other things before returning and still nothing. Do I have to have him fix the sword first, or if I give him the sword is it too late? Or do I have to just keep waiting.

Second question, if I smash the crystal in the sorcerer's tower, can I still get the scene where he tries to blow me off the cliff?

That's not random, it's triggered by something else.
