A man after my own uncluttered heart. Love that type of picture as well. I also shot my background pic. It's a shot of the Cascade mountain range on the way up to Whistler and is totally undoctored. Weird weather that day.

I am quite anal-retentive about my desktop.

If I have any two applications from the same company, I make a folder. If I can group those folders in to a larger category, they go into another folder. If I'm not using something, I put it in my Random Stuff folder.

1024x768 with 24 bit colour depth does make a pretty big file, yes.

Well, considering that my desktop, resized to 1120x700 (originally 1680x1050 (I need a bigger monitor )), was less than half the size (bitwise) of Samuel's desktop and saved as PNG and that he says that he didn't rename it, yeah, something tells me he saved the image as a BMP with a PNG extension.

But that's just me.

Edit: I just noticed that the unresized image of my desktop is 1.2 MB. Umm, I'm pretty sure my 1680x1050 PNG isn't supposed to be smaller than a 1024x768 PNG.

The size of a png file highly depends on how compressible the image content is and what program is used to create the file. Some programs have particularly sloppy algorithms and add all sorts of useless metadata. For example with Pngout I was able to compress samuels png file further from 1464kB to 766kB, almost 50% smaller.

My desktop hasn't changed a whole lot since my last post, though I did change the wallpaper again (also a shot I took from the summit of Mount Diablo), and I turned ClearType on to make fonts smoother.

Don't. Use. BMP!
Why does this need to be stressed?
Edit: Okay, it doesn't work with a BMP extension. Don't use MSPaint for making PNGs then!
Ediit: It only compresses to 1.7 MB with pngout. Blergh.
Ediiit: It smashes down to 293 KB in JPG (quality 85), however. Good enough for me!
