A general hint:

You can get behind the Aumtlich, and get it to turn in the direction yo want if you wait for it in this position:

1.       2.       3.
  \B..     \B..     .|..
  .\..     .A..     .AB.
  ..A.     ....     ....


B=Beethro. A=Aumtlich. \=Gaze.

You can do this little trick when the aumtlich is turned in any diagonal direction, on any side of the aumtlich. To get some more knowledge of the aumtlichs movement preferences I would recommend playing through the tutorial for this hold, and reading all the scrolls in it carefully.
