Vector Vendetta: Vengeance Version

This is a fast-paced shooting game with retro-style vector graphics, that I've whipped up in a few days just because. It's probably the first AGS game that uses a grand total of zero sprites.

Using your mighty triangular ship, defeat the evil polygons of doom! It starts out easy, but on later levels you'll be quickly overwhelmed by swarms of enemies!

Note that keyboard mappings have changed slightly, to account for left-handed users. Use Z,X to turn.

* Twenty different enemies, from lowly Wonk to nasty BFG, and a final boss monster!
* Seventeen powerups and special weapons, from teleportation to nukes.
* Retro soundtrack.
* Keeps track of high scores.
* Three difficulty levels. The nastier enemies only appear on higher difficulty.
* Three game modes. Normal, survival, and battle.
* Two-player mode!
* New: demo recording
* Enjoy!

Just got around to playing this, and it's a quite fun game! On the first level with the fragmentation enemies, I destroyed all of them but the game didn't go to the next level so I was stuck shooting, not sure why. Perhaps it was something to do with me activating 'Turbo'?
Also, I notice you put me in the high scores list! I demand royalties. $50,000 will do nicely, thank you.
I do have one suggestion though. Perhaps, instead of losing one life in one hit, you could turn a red colour for 10 seconds or something, and if you get hit during that time you lose a life, and after that time you return to normal? Just an idea. I haven't got further than about half a dozen levels though, so I'm not sure just how hard they get.

I noticed a typo in the code for the Aster, using a > rather than a >= sign. This has now been fixed, try downloading again.

Heh. No, that was another stew boy. Not my fault that you haven't trademarked the term :P

I do have one suggestion though. Perhaps, instead of losing one life in one hit, you could turn a red colour for 10 seconds or something,
If the game is too hard (and it's quite possible that it is) I'd be more in favor of adding a health bar, or simply giving more lives. I find that with a bit of practice, reaching level 11 or so is quite feasible, but at that point the BFGs come in and it gets nasty.

The trick is to know which enemies to terminate with extreme prejudice (e.g. Kamis) and which to simply avoid until you can get them into your sight conveniently (e.g. Asters). Also, you'll really need the powerups; it depends on your playstyle which work best for you (shield is awesome, though).

Just downloaded, then played for a half hour. It's a nice addictive little game. Personal high score so far: 1025.

I may be dating myself a bit here, but it kind of reminds me of the game "Asteroids" for the Atari 2600. Your version, however, has a larger variety of better--and more challenging--targets.

I've only ever messed about with AGS, but how did you manage Zero Sprites?
Is it using plugins?
Either way, as soon as I can I'll give this game a try...

Pretty good!

I tend to die as soon as I get to the BFGs. They're evil :glasses

By using vector graphics, hence the name. And no, I don't use plugins (mainly because they're unnecessary and break compatibility).

My new high score: 1952. Now for a list of questions/comments/bug reports.

Great music.
I noticed that when you finish a game and immediately start a new one, your score doesn't refresh from the previous game.
Whenever I use the laser, I end up getting stuck on that level and have to restart.
Can you get extra lives, and if so, how?
Every so often on a level, some crosshair thing comes after me. What is that?
Radiant wrote:

Which one's the BFG? I usually die around the Magnus, and sometimes (barely) manage to reach the level following it.

I believe I fixed those a few weeks ago; please download again and see if that improves things for you.

Can you get extra lives, and if so, how?
Yes. The fifth powerup goes "shrink" - "shield" - "1 up".

Every so often on a level, some crosshair thing comes after me. What is that?
It means the Enemy has found you, and marked you for explodey death!

The ones that fire frickin' laser beams at you. That's a few levels later than Magnus.

I thought something like that. By the way, I hit a bit of a lucky streak in my game last night. New high score: 2818.

Thanks, but like I said, I was lucky; otherwise, I might've only gotten a final score of about 2100. I usually finish most games with a score of about 1500-1600.

And as for losing 3 lives in the same level, don't be discouraged; that happens a to me a lot, and I've been playing arcade-type games for about 20 years.

Upon investigating, I note that your score does in fact reset, but the on-screen score counter does not. Weird. I'll fix that.

(edit) fixed. You can download again, it's only a slight visual difference.

Yeah, that's what I meant before. Redownloaded, and it's fixed. However, I noticed a few other bugs:

The game doesn't show your score until you either collect a powerup or finish the first level, whichever comes first.
After you finish a game, you start the next game with a "warp" powerup, and the list of powerups available doesn't refresh on-screen correctly (sometimes shows 2 powerups highlighted).
Sometimes using ESC to end a game doesn't work.

Edit: Another bug:
Sometimes when a powerup hits the edge of the screen, it disappears instead of bouncing back. The same is true for Asters with one hit left.

played it till i got bored.
my high score was a little above 2500.
so far I have only managed to get to the BFG's once( If you dont count using the number to skip to higher levels), and died in the first few seconds.
either way, it's a great game.
might have even been worth all the time it took to download. :D

I got to BFG only once myself, and got killed almost instantly (it was my last life anyway). I don't skip levels, however; I consider it to be cheating.

Also, for some reason, the laser still won't work right for me. :angry

By the way, I've got yet another high score to report: 3043.

One more thing, About the vector graphics.
How would you go about implementing them into an AGS game?
I've never used vector graphics myself, but I know basically how it works.

Using RawDrawLine. Note that this is really not what AGS was intended for.

My graphics card apparently cannot support 320x160 resolution. I don't know if the game runs in that, but its the error I get.

Also, you CAN technically use a gamepad... You just need an emulator (not a ROM emulator) so that you can trick Windows into thinking you click or move the mouse when you do so on the gamepad. ;)

Not particularly, it runs in 640x480 most of the time. Nevertheless, you'd probably be able to get it to work in windowed mode. Which, I believe, is the default.

:w00t I knew I was good, but didn't know I was that good. Then again, growing up with similar games has its advantages, so I'm sort of familiar with the mechanics to begin with. Plus, if you saw the way I move around on the screen, you'd swear I was drunk.:drunk

Just out of curiosity, what's the highest score so far, anyway? And who holds it? (I can probably guess, though.)

I think I found a few more bugs:

Aster and Kudzu only give you points when you kill them. I think it's true for Neumann as well, but I keep getting (almost) instantly killed by a BFG before I can check.
When a powerup is traveling horizontally across the screen, it disappears when it hits the left edge.
Your retro shots ricochet off Bricks.
When I play in Full Screen mode, I have to use the Task Manager to close the program.
Asters with one hit left will sometimes mysteriously disappear, leaving behind an enemy shot traveling along the Aster's last trajectory; the shot exits the screen normally though.
Lasers still won't work right for me.

No new high score to report this time; a lowly Snipe got me as I was finishing Neumann.:ranting

Can you please make it so WASD keys would work like arrows? I mean, some people only have one arm on each side, so the whole mouse/arrows solution will be really awkward for them.

I guess this means the left/right rotation keys would have to move to Q/E.
In fact, while we're at it, I would make Z/X alternate rotation buttons, therefore breaking it into two distinct combinations - move with arrows and aim with Z/X or move with WASD and aim with the mouse, without limiting any intermediate combinations.

That in turn would move the shoot where you point button from Z to C.
But I can live with that. Nobody ever uses it anyway. Grumble grumble, useless shoot where you point button.

I got a really weird error last night. I was flying around Kami just about to finish up the level when the game crashed, and gave me a window with an error message; attached is the screenshot. Actually, I've gotten this message once or twice before; this was the only time I've managed to capture it.
