Yeah, it looks like you weren't supposed to include 0's after all...not that I would have gotten it without that, I think I was on the right track but then I got distracted by something shiny.

The name of the book is A Void, by Geroges Perec. Or, more accurately, that's the name of the English translation - the original was written in French (also without E's), and the fact that someone managed to translate it is as big a wonder as the fact that it was written in the first place. It's a great work of art - that said, it's a very difficult book to follow.

As to where you can find it - there's a copy on the shelf in my room, but that's not very helpful to you. Amazon doesn't seem to have it (they say it's out of print), but Barnes and Noble's website lists the following used copies:

It's a good read - but, as I said above, not an easy one. The E-lessness is tied in a very direct, though strange, way to the plot, which makes it far more interesting than if it was just a trick used to obscure an unrelated plot. Of course, it's still very gimmicky.

Also, I honestly don't know how the English version compares to the French original - as far as I understand, the translation is very liberal, as a lot of it relies on English word tricks that don't have direct counterparts (and I'm sure the original relied on similar tricks in French). Of course, this shouldn't matter much - the English version should be taken on its own merit - but if anyone who sees this ever reads both versions, I'd be interested in knowing what they think.

Anyway, enough hijacking this thread for literary discussion...

In a kingdom live 2 types of dragons. Rational dragons have decided not to devour livestock and humans. Predators however do.

There are also 2 colours of dragon red and grey. Red rationals always lie and red predators always tell the truth. Grey rationals always tell the truth and grey predators always lie.

A colour blind knight encounters 4 dragons. They make the folowing statements.

A: B and I are the same colour and type
I am grey
C is a predator

B: A's statements are false
C and I are the same colour
D and I are the same type

C: A and D are different colours but the same type

D: A and B are the same colour but different types

What is the colour and types of the different dragons?

A must be lying - if he was telling the truth, then so would B, but B's first statement would contradict it.

Therefore, A is a red rational.
Thus, B is telling the truth and C is a rational.
If C is telling the truth, then D is a grey rational and B is a red predator. This contradicts B's "D and I are the same type", so C must be lying, and is a red rational.

A - red rational
C - red rational

B is the same color as C, so B is a red predator.
D is the same type as B, so D is a predator. D is telling the truth so must be a red predator.

A - red rational
B - red predator
C - red rational
D - red predator

A man grows bananas, and has 3000 bananas that he wants to take to the market. The market is 1000 miles across the desert. The man is going to transport the bananas using only his one camel, which can carry at most 1000 bananas at a time. The camel needs to eat one banana for every mile it walks, regardless of the number of bananas it's carrying.

How many bananas will the man be able to get to the market?

He can transport all the bananas 1 mile by expending 5:
take 1000 -> eat 1 (drop 998) -> 1 to go back
take 1000 -> eat 1 (drop 998) -> 1 to go back
take 1000 -> eat 1

In all:
200mi covered using 1000 bananas (5/mile)

Then you can transport all the remaining bananas 1 mile by expending 3:
take 1000 -> eat 1 (drop 998) -> 1 to go back
take 1000 -> eat 1

In all:
200mi + 333 1/3mi covered using 1000 bananas (3/mile)

Then he can transport the remaining 1000 bananas by expending 1 each mile,
In all: 200mi + 333 1/3mi + 466 2/3mi using 467 bananas (1/mile)

There are 533 left

Okay, here goes:

There are four soldiers that need to get across a bridge in the middle of the night to get to the other side. Only two people can cross the bridge at a time and they have only 1 flashlight, which they all must use to cross the bridge. One soldier can cross the bridge in 1 minute, another can cross the bridge in 2 minutes, the third in 5 minutes and the fourth in 10 minutes.

How do all four people get across the bridge in 17 minutes using 1 flashlight? (No, you cannot throw the flashlight across the bridge for the other two people to use to cross over.)

OOH! I've seen something similar, but this version is new to me.

So, I feel alright in posting the answer, as I've had to solve it.

   side 1 bridge side 2 time
1: ________----1,2------____5,10    2s
2: ____1___----2--------5,10____    2s
3: ____1___----5,10-----2_______    10s
4: __5,10__----1--------2_______    1s
5: __5,10__----1,2------________    2s

Total time?  17s.

Okay, now for a puzzle of my own.

Beth and Jim are found dead, surrounded by broken glass. Fortunately, the authorities found the killer still inside the house! But they didn't even give him a court trial. Why?
