I banned the IP address, but didn't delete the actual user. I guess that's the way I usually do it. This way at least if they switch to a different computer then they have the same username so we can identify them quickly.

Guys, don't worry about the mechanics of this. Purposefully, the different tools moderators use for restricting users are kept private. They tend to work better that way.

As long as there's only a reference to the spammy post I see no problem - just don't quote their spammy URLs. I mean, this thread's title announces that it's about SPAM; isn't that enough warning?

Simply having lasting reminders that there is spam that makes its way to this forum seems to make people exaggerate the problem.

Actually, I doubt I would have seen the post unless someone Jason had pointed it out. I don't read every single forum any more and I rely on posts like this. I could suggest that people e-mail moderators@caravelgames.com or PM one of us, and post that they did so in the spammer's thread, but this way is fine with me too.

I think it's allowed -- presumably the user in question is posting content that's appropriate to the forum. In which case I think Erik has said that a little plug in your sig file is OK as long as it doesn't get out of hand.

Problem comes when someone decides to create a user, dump a big advert into the sig, and then post something pseudo-appropriate on some message board. But that's a judgment call for the admins...

I've actually seen many of this kind of users lately (ie. creating a user, making a sigature, and doing nothing). I'd say no to this, but fortunately I'm not an admin (as I don't have the time to do it).

However, for this one I'd make an exception, since the link doesn't even work.

Well, I did notice that username as newly registered recently so it could quite innocently be a new forumite who's filled in their profile but has yet to post. A lot of people don't actually end up posting but register because they enjoy the game.

I don't think there's an issue.
