icon Possible FAQ: How are scores calculated? (0)
I've been browsing through the forums trying to find the answer for this, but so far haven't come up with a real answer. Is it somewhere that I have missed?

I'm looking at 'My Scores'. It shows my Conquered Holds (at the moment just King Dugan's Dungeon and The Choice), it shows my current holds (a few more). And it has a score number associated with each one.

I'm trying to figure out how the score is calculated. I saw a message from Oneiromancer that said something to the effect that you got a point for completing a room, but then my scores seem very low (I've finished KDD but only have a score in the 200s).
And then I saw some other people with scores for KDD in the 500s. So I'm guessing there's more to it than that.

Anyone have any pointers?

Thanks!
Josh

You have 340 points for KDD 2.0, and you have solved 280 rooms there.

Basically, you get the following amount of points based on your ranking:

1st - 17 points
2nd - 13 points
3rd - 10 points
4th - 8 points
5th - 6 points
6th - 4 points
7th - 3 points
8th - 2 points
9th or worse - 1 point

Ah well, that's what I get for trying to post based on my memory. Not as young as I used to be, I guess.

Thanks for the explanation!

Note also that what counts is the number of your placement on the highscores in the forum, which can be different than the number reported by the game in case of a tie (so, if you got a 1st place tie, that's a 2nd place score. And if you got a 2nd place score but someone got a 1st place tie, that's a 3rd place score, and so forth).

Ok, I looked at some of my scores, and it seems we were both partially right, though you were far closer to the truth than I was. Ties above 1st place don't matter - a 2nd place tie is the same as 2nd place. However, I'm pretty sure that I was right in that a 1st place tie pushes other scores down. So the following seems to be the case:

If there was no first place tie:

1st - 17 points
2nd - 13 points
3rd - 10 points
4th - 8 points
5th - 6 points
6th - 4 points
7th - 3 points
8th - 2 points
9th or worse - 1 point

If there was a first place tie:

1st - 17 points
1st tie - 13 points
2nd - 10 points
3rd - 8 points
4th - 6 points
5th - 4 points
6th - 3 points
7th - 2 points
8th or worse - 1 point

As soon as I get confirmation that this is right, I'll throw'er in the CaravelNet FAQ.

If you want to be truly pedantic, the real scoring is 16, 12, 9, 7, 5, 3, 2, 1, 0, and then you get 1 point for simply solving the room. :)

Game on,

Actually, I'm not entirely sure I'm right anymore - I know I got the order right, but it occured to me that it may be impossible to actually get the game to give you a "2nd place" if it already gave a "1st place tie"; i.e., if the first three demos are 5, 5, and 6, I'm not sure how the 6-turn solution would be labelled. It would definitely get 10 points, though.
