For a while now I've been working on a DROD puzzle. And I apologize for the lack of a story to go along with it.

Eight Gates of Bill - Revisited

All I'm asking for is the number of total unique solutions to open all eight doors between 5 and 9 strikes.

# of solutions hitting exactly 5 orbs + # of solutions hitting exactly 6 orbs + # of solutions hitting exactly 7 orbs + # of solutions hitting exactly 8 orbs + # of solutions hitting exactly 9 orbs = The answer I seek.

That's what I'm looking for, but if you want to try and find the number of solutions for 10 orbs, or 15, or 20, go right ahead, but I can't verify them. I do know the answer to the question I've proposed.

levelthirteen e-mailed me a response:

5 orbs
432/24 = 18
6 orbs
804/6 = 134
7 orbs
964/2 = 482
8 orbs
1032 = 1032
9 orbs
1122 = 1122

total = 2788

there are no solutions
for ten or more orbs because
there are only nine orbs alltogether.
In the other thread on the 8
Gates of Bill, Shik had assked
a similar question, so it was very easy
to answer your question.

Nope, sorry. Incorrect. You've got the 5 orb solution right. A "unique" solution doesn't mean that you can't hit the same orb more than once. So there is a ten-orb solution (an example being 6,5,3,2,7,4,6,7,6,7 when numbering the orbs from top to bottom, the first orb being 1), as well as 100 - orb solutions. Also, I'd like for you to explain to me the logic behind the divisions you performed. Thanks.

I'll guess that the sum you are looking for is:

Damn, I guess my puzzle wasn't that hard after all.

And if you thought the CPU usage was high in your program, the one I wrote was in Good Ol' Pascal. It's the only langauge I can do a little programming in.

I still don't understand this:

The /24 /6 /2 stuff was counting the orbs struck later.

(0) 0 2 7 1 5 6 // 8 3 4
(1) 0 2 7 1 5 6 // 8 4 3

(3) 0 2 7 1 5 6 // 3 8 4
(4) 0 2 7 1 5 6 // 4 8 3
(5) 0 2 7 1 5 6 // 4 3 8
(6) 0 2 7 5 1 6 // 8 4 3
(7) 0 2 7 5 1 6 // 8 3 4
(8) 0 2 7 5 1 6 // 4 3 8

Attached is the output of the older try. As for the hardness of your puzzle, half the challenge is typing the orb mappings into something compilable, which some of us have already done, for instance.
