I'm trying out a puzzle idea. I'm going to make two posts below that are abstractions of famous pictures. I want to see who can guess correctly what they are. Since I'm trying to make a new kind of puzzle from scratch, I'd appreciate any constructive criticism you have. Also, I won't be surprised if someone somewhere has made something exactly the same or very similar.

If you post the answer or spoilers, put them in secret tags.

The first one I think is pretty easy. I'm guessing a lot of people should get it at a glance. The second one, I'm hoping is a little harder and provides an "Aha!" moment to those that guess it.

I should point out that once you have an idea, it is pretty easy to verify that the idea is correct. Google for the image and compare the puzzle image to it. Rects should line up pretty clearly with the elements they depict.

I got the second one almost right away, but have so far no idea about the first one.

This looks like a very interesting puzzle format, but I am concerned it's one of those things where you either know the answer immediately or not at all.

About Rabscuttle's guess for the first one...never mind! I stand corrected...Rabscuttle was correct. Good job!

Possibly. As long as the image is known and the clues are well chosen, I think it could be possible to work it out. #1 was probably a lucky guess

Yeah, I wish there was a way I could tell the person playing the puzzle if they had seen the picture before without giving the answer away. I am relying here on images that nearly everyone has seen many times, and would recognize instantly if they were shown the original image.

It seems like a fruitful idea worth developing. If anybody else wants to throw a picture of their own up here, I would love to try it from the solving side.

It's hard to think of a good picture.

Here's one that is probably very easy.

Here it is (under the secret tag)

Boxes are probably not _exact_, but I don't think it should matter.

Rabs is right, picking a good picture is hard.

I picked one out, then after starting I realized... (little bit of a spoiler: )
Click here to view the secret text
, but I had already started, so I finished it.

I also started making too many boxes, but couldn't decide what to get rid of, so I just left them all in, and used short descriptions. Meh.

These puzzles remind me a lot of "Language Equations" (examples one and two). Example: 4 = S. in a D. of C. (4 Suits in a Deck of Cards).

They can be either immediately obvious or have you cudgeling your brain for hours. And some of them are extremely topical...I remember the "original" puzzle set I got in elementary school had ones that we were mostly able to get except for "18 1/2 = M. E. from the W. T." Which some old person finally realized was "18 1/2 Minutes Erased from the Watergate Tapes." :P

Anyway, it seems like it could be quite interesting as long as you get the genders of the people correct. ;)

Game on,

Yeah, sorry. I suck. For anyone trying to get the 1st puzzle, the "Woman looking intently left, with hands pointing towards her chest." should be "Man looking intently left...".

On reflection, I don't think my first example is exactly the same style of puzzle as the others. There are definitely more clues that could be given - but I think that might make the answer too obvious. I'll whip up another version.
