The genre is so big and varied that most of what I download I do not like.

I'm looking for:

-high bpm rate
-lots of synthesized elements and less emphesis on the drums
-no vocals

A perfect example of this stuff is the music found in Webfoot DROD.

So... can someone recommend to me some names of artists?

Thanks,
SbCl3

Here's a few classic groups that are maybe too obvious, but seem to match your specs:

* Aphex Twin
* Orbital

If you haven't heard them, I say you are in for a treat. Also, try, but these are a little more ambient, with less BPM:

* Plaid
* Red Snapper

...and when Jon Sonnenberg's music is released with TCB, I think you may enjoy it a lot. If I'm way off on my recommendations, give out some bands that match what you like. I'm assuming you're staying away from trance and drum and bass since that's more beat-driven.

Well, he's got quite some emphasis on the drum on some tracks...

* Orbital
Good call; too bad they've disbanded after 15 years. Also, may contain vocals.
* Plaid
* Red Snapper
Good calls, too.

The "MAS Confusion" compilation on Musik Aus Strom probably fits what he's looking for, as would be the "Pop Ambient 200x" (for x ranging from 1 to 6) compilations on Kompakt, although it might not exactly be high BPM.

Darrell Fitton (Bola on SKAM and Jello on Peacefrog) comes to mind, as do Boards of Canada.

Oh, and of course lots of the stuff Thinner/Autoplate and Sutemos put out might fit the bill...

(Come to think of it, finding electronic music without vocals in it and with no emphasis on rhythm in my collection is getting harder every minute... :huh

How about giving us a little less constrains, huh? :D)

Yeah, Richard D. James is all over the place though. Somewhere in his prolific mess, you can find just about anything you want.

I agree. The high BPM requirement makes it difficult too. Because as soon as you get rid of vocals and big beats, typically what's left is a lot of slower ambient stuff--spacey, new agey, loungey.

I actually don't mind low BPM, don't decide recommendations based on that.

Ambient music is quickly making it's way into my collection.

As has been said, Richard D. James varies greatly in sound from track to track and he's very experimental- some of his tracks sound like they're daring you to keep listening to them. That said, I love his work and have collected most of his output that I've found on CD under his various names: Aphex Twin, AFX, Caustic Window, Polygon Window.

The two CDs of his I'd mostly likely suggest for your tastes are:
Polygon Window - Surfing on Sine Waves
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92 (not really an ambient title dispite its name. There is a vol. 2 which IS very much an ambient album and is good, but not what you asked for in the original post)

I've got a few CDs by Sasha and John Digweed that are pretty good:
Northern Exposure III (Northern Exposure Vol. 1 is good too, as is Communicate)
Also Sasha's Xpander EP is very good, upbeat and fun.

I've got some Moby CDs too, but he can be hit or miss- plus he often uses vocals. However, his "I Like to Score" album is a collection of his work that has appeared in films, and you might also like his "Ambient" album.

I'm very picky when it comes to music, so I'm going to recommend mostly individual pieces.

Front Line Assembly: Silent Ceremony
Front Line Assembly: Synthetic Forms

You may want to check Tangerine Dream. Pieces I like are:
Tangerine Dream: Catwalk
Tangerine Dream: Cottage
Tangerine Dream: Song Of The Whale

Porcupine Tree: Up The Downstair
Porcupine Tree: Idiot Prayer

Vangelis !!! You want to get lots of Vangelis if you like electronica.

Vangelis: Blade Runner soundtrack (ALL of it)
Vangelis: 1492 soundtrack (a.k.a. Conquest of Paradise, all of it, again)

Vangelis: Voices (entire CD, but Come To Me is my favourite)

Vangelis: The Will Of The Wind
Vangelis: Metallic Rain
Vangelis: Island of the Orient
Vangelis: Spiral

I don't like Mike Oldfield too much, but some of his pieces are undeniably great.

Mike Oldfield: Let There Be Light
Mike Oldfield: Only Time Will Tell
Mike Oldfield: Sentinel
Mike Oldfield: Tubular World
Mike Oldfield: Ascension
Mike Oldfield: Weightless

Depeche Mode: Ultra (my favourite DM cd, and contains several good ambients, too)

Wumpscut: Wreath Of Barbs
(I generally hate remixes, but these 2 are too good:)
Wumpscut: Totmacher remix by Forma Tadre
Wumpscut: Ich Will Dich remix by Forma Tadre

Delerium (weird band, but did some really good music in their early years)
Delerium:Sermon
Delerium:Barren Ground/Fathoms
Delerium:Desert
Delerium:Relics (let's see how far your love for ambients goes)
Delerium:Dark Matter (ambient)
Delerium:Cloud Barrier (ambient)
Delerium:Stone Tower (ambient)
Delerium:Brainwaves (ambient)
Delerium:Twilight Rituals (ambient)
Delerium:Deceased
Delerium:Rise Above (one of my favourite ambients)
Delerium:Dark Star (ambient)
Delerium:Lost Passion (ambient)
Delerium:Red Hill (ambient)
Delerium:Sphere (ambient)

You may also like Deus Ex music by Mark Morgan.

Oh. This thread wouldn't be complete without Richard D. James'(?) charming smile.

The badger's taste overlaps mine a lot.

I'm going to add a few to my original list since Sb seemed open to a little genre-spanning:

* M83 (Great grandiose music with some harsh synth noise. Many tracks have vocals, but they couldn't be more understated.)
* Royksopp (Some songs like Poor Leno have a lot of vocals, but it is mostly instrumental. Both The Understanding and Melody A.M. are great albums.)
* U-ziq (This is bizarre, divorced-from-popular-culture stuff. It doesn't sound funky or bound to any particular genre. It sounds like a guy locked in a room with synthesizers for 30 years.)
* Harold Budd (Very ambient.)

Oh. This thread wouldn't be complete without Richard D. James'(?) charming smile.
My wife hates looking at that guy. All I have to do to freak her out is go:

I. Waaaaaaaaant. Your soulllllllll.

...and maybe open my mouth really wide in front of her face like the evil guy in the video.

Heh. I really like Melody A.M. (and Erlend Oye in general, but that's another matter) and would have bought The Understanding and an M83 album (for testing after hearing good things about them) - if those dain-bramaged European record labels hadn't slapped playback-prevention stuff on the discs.

That's a killer argument against buying a CD for me, as I do most of my listening using either Foobar2000 or my 1GB Flash MP3 player on the way to work so playing the CDs on my stereo just ain't gonna happen, not to mention that I couldn't have game/system sounds and music at the same time that way.

Would the US CDs happen to not have that crap on them, by any chance? *wonders*

I dunno. Got my stuff off Streamwaves and then Rhapsody after Streamwaves disappeared. I'm staying away from that extra junk on the CD too.

My copy of The Understanding (bought in the USA) doesn't look like it has any extra junk on it. I just looked at what is on the CD through file manager and it only lists 12 CD audio tracks.

I long ago disabled autoplay on my CD drive and haven't had anything installed that I didn't want from a copy protected CD. Of course, I don't do any ripping of my CDs to my PC, so I don't know if there are problems ripping those sorts of CDs beyond the junk they try to install on your PC.

If you're anything like me (i.e. finding yourself interested in this kind of music because you feel vocals distract you and tend to "take over" the song in your mind), here are some ideas:

(artist: album. songs, if any, mentioned after)

Future Sound of London: Accelerator (esp Papua New Guinea, perhaps their most famous song)
Future Sound of London: Lifeforms (!!awesome!!)
Loop Guru: Loop Bites Dog (esp White Light)
Juno Reactor: Beyond the Infinite
Juno Reactor: Bible of Dreams (esp the first three tracks)
Not Breathing: Time Music of the Quazars (and most of his other cds, as well)
Rapoon: Darker by Light (and more of his other cds as well)
Windsor for the Derby: Calm Hades Float (more ambient than the others, except Rapoon)

and, oh, sure, if I could recreate my "awesome music" tape of 1999 on cd today, it would include tracks by the above mentioned plus: Aqualite, Sensorium, Sun Electric, Air Liquide, O Yuki Conjugate, and Deutsch Nepal...but, you know, a lot of stuff I really like isn't published anymore.
