When Beethro picks up this potion bottle, he may place a blob of tar anywhere on the level that it will fit. The blob should be at least 3x3, but perhaps 4x4 would be better (or possibly it could be decided individually for each bottle by the room creator, up to any size or shape he/she wants). This blob acts just like normal tar, and is affected by any current tar mothers.

The strategy behind using one of these is for Beethro to be able to create his own blockade that he can remove when he needs to. If there is a tar mother around, then time is of the essence, and also perhaps Beethro could place the the tar strategically to either make necessary tar babies or to make as few as possible (perhaps he is forced to use the tar bottle).

That's all I have for now.

Game on,

Nice... I like it! Fits in with the idea that we should have more than two kinds of potions.

I also like how it can be used to help or hinder. One question - how does it react to being placed somewhere with enemies or walls? Does it kill them? Does it make a hole in the tar? Does it warp? Does it disallow its placement there?

All of these options make for interesting puzzles.

Matt

Hmmm...

The way I envision it, if you can't place the entire section of tar, then you can't place it at all, so that would limit the placement severely. However, since tar is currently a different layer than the walls or other special items, there is probably no reason why it cannot cover them up, except that it might make it even more difficult to figure out where the best place to put it is. Checkpoints required near a tar in a bottle in this case!

In the original scenario, if you placed tar near other tar it would just be assimilated. But another option could be that the tar in a bottle, while it will still grow at the direction of a tar mother, is actually deadly to "normal" tar when it first comes out. So you could place it directly on tar to destroy it (thus removing two square wide passages...yay!), but after that it will mix with existing tar (since the tar mother assimilates it or something like that).

More suggestions welcome!
