This topic will only contain hold updates and player commands. I've locked it so that only I can post in it. For discussion, please post in the main topic.

What to Expect

For each cycle, after the deadline for sending commands has passed, I'll post a list of all commands. After working on the hold update for a while, I'll post it here along with a deadline for submitting commands which will be at least 24 hours away from time of posting. As soon as a hold update is posted here, you can submit commands for that cycle.

Hold Updates are Final

Hold updates are final once posted here. Because of the large amount of work involved in updating the hold, we won't roll back updates even if they have errors in them. It's possible that an error affects you negatively or maybe even kills you--in that case let me know about the error, and I'll probably kick you some rank points as a consolation.

Finding Mistakes Before They are Permanent

If this still sounds terribly unfair, you can spend some time reviewing updates before they're released on the "Pre-update Work" topic. A draft version of the hold will always be posted there before it is posted here and becomes final. I recommend that you review the movement of your character and the characters close enough to affect you on each cycle. It will help everyone else too--not just you--if you can spot mistakes.

Submitting Commands

Please read the rules in the main topic about submitting commands. There is a specific way it should be done.

The deadline for submitting your commands is Local Time:10-12-2005 at 01:00 AM. See rules in the main topic for how to submit commands. I apologize for being late and shaving off about 4 hours of your decision-making time, but I had to replace my brake pads today, and then the server crashed. :(

This hold has corrections for the problems discussed on the "pre-update work" topic. If you were on the east side of the room, and already thought out your commands, take another look and make sure they still make sense.

One word of warning: for this cycle, delete the old "Smite to the Death" hold before importing this new one. Otherwise you may have a few problems with versions. After this cycle, you shouldn't have to worry about it.

The room in this hold will start you out at the beginning of the 2nd cycle and show what happens leading up to the start of cycle 3 if you press 5 repeatedly. I had to similate burning fuses, so many of the truly lit fuses in this room appear as unlit. The lengths are set to be 5 squares shorter than they were at the beginning of cycle 2. Or in other words, truly lit fuses are shown at the length they will be on the first turn of cycle 3. There are still some truly unlit fuses left in the room. Any fuse that is the same length as it was at the beginning of the game is truly unlit, so that stepping on it may have some effect in the game.

The room in this hold will start you out at the beginning of the 3nd cycle and show what happens leading up to the start of cycle 4 if you press 5 repeatedly.

All of the "unlit" fuses are burning and their lengths are set where they will be on the 5th turn of the 3rd cycle. The bomb on the west side that has no fuse will explode on the first turn of the 4th cycle!

The Squeezening: I want people to be pressed into close quarters to keep the kills coming. You may notice that the orbs have been replaced with rocks and the doors have been replaced with floor squares. Just before the first turn of the 6th cycle is performed, everything outside of the "door" squares will fall away to pits. If you are on the outside squares when this happens, you'll die without adding to your kill count. Being on a "door" square itself is safe. Now aren't you glad you didn't just skim over this paragraph without reading it?

I'm working away from my office today and won't be posting commands until I get home. So I've extended the deadline today a few hours. The post before this one has been updated to show the new deadline. I'll send confirmations when I get home, but for most people that wouldn't be enough time to notice that their commands hadn't been received. The best thing is to just make sure you are sending your commands to contests@caravelgames.com.

The room in this hold will start you out at the beginning of the 5th cycle and show what happens leading up to the start of the 6th cycle if you press 5 repeatedly.

All remaining bombs explode in the 5th cycle except one in the southeast that will be gone with the Squeezening at start of 6th cycle. So don't worry about bombs.

For that matter, don't worry about the Squeezening. You are either safe at this point or dead. ClaytonW unfortunately is not safe, and will be falling off the board before he even gets a chance to move. Sorry, Clay! No doubt something came up that took precedence over this silly game.

What should you worry about then? Sharp swords, as usual. But there is a new problem with which you must deal. At the end of this cycle (6) and those following, you will have to contend with the Straggler's Curse. Here are the new rules:

* If more than two players remain in the game...
* And if no kills occur in the cycle... (removals don't count)
* And if there is at least one player who is 4 or more spaces away from any other player... (measuring explained below)
* The player who is furthest from other players succumbs to Straggler's Curse and is removed at end of the cycle. No kill counts are incremented.
* A player's distance is evaluated based on the nearest player to him. The measurement is taken by counting the number of steps from his body to the destination player, taking a beeline path with no squares acting as obstacles.
* If two or more players have the same furthest distance, then the player with a later (higher) sequence number will be removed.

The room in this hold will start you out at the beginning of the 6th cycle and show what happens leading up to the start of the 7th cycle if you press 5 repeatedly.

The Straggler's Curse rules are no longer in effect.

The Squeezening is back! At the end of each cycle the perimeter of the traversible area in the center will shrink by one square. Don't be on the perimeter squares after your 5th command in a cycle is performed! If you fall off the edge, you'll be removed from the game with no kill count increment.

I will try to keep the rules constant for the rest of the game. I would like people to have some assurance that their long-term plans won't be disrupted by anything other than ordinary bad luck.

The room in this hold will start you out at the beginning of the 7th cycle and show what happens leading up to the start of the 8th cycle if you press 5 repeatedly.

Okay, I want to explain this next part to avoid confusion. With the continued Squeezening, there are two things to worry about:

1. Do not plan commands that move you onto perimeter squares. The perimeter squares shown in the hold will be gone before your first command for the cycle is performed. Your attempted movements onto the perimeter square will be changed to "wait" commands. So it's actually impossible for you to move onto the perimeter squares shown in any hold update given for a cycle.

2. Do not be 1 square inside the perimeter after your 5th command. You will fall into a pit and be removed from the game if you do that.

Make sense? Please ask questions if it doesn't. I don't want people getting killed cuz dey is ignunt.

The room in this hold will start you out at the beginning of the 11th cycle and show what happens leading up to the start of the 12th cycle if you press 5 repeatedly.

I know I said I didn't want to change any rules, but there is one slight change anyhow:

Squeezening occurs immediately after the 5th turn of any cycle. The sand tiles shown at the beginning of that cycle will then be removed. As long as you aren't on the sand tiles at the end of your 5th turn, you'll be safe from squeezening.
