The Final Confrontation : Return : 1 South (0)

Is it possible to kill the roaches in the cross shaped section in the south part of the room? If I bring Halph into the room with me, I can kill the roaches, but can't get out of the area again (the button that opens the cross shaped door closes the tiny door at the bottom so I can't access the second button). But if I leave Halph outside the room, I'm overwhelmed by roaches.
