You can use the HTML-style character escape, like '-'. http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/

However, it's error-prone. when you preview your message (and I presume when it is quoted as well) it will revert to just the character.

Of course, it also does seem like URL parsing ought not to stop when it encounters the hyphen.
