Journey to Rooted Hold: Twenty-Fourth Level: Once South, Once West

Don't let the mud to the north grow any further west than column 15.

I made the challenge harder. Also, I'd like to clarify that column 15 is the 16th column on the screen (look here).

Super hard: let the mud expand no further than the 6th arrow from the right.

Rabscuttle,

whoever pulls that one off is a genius in my book. However,
I have counted squares and find it a bit tight (may have
miscounted, someone please check.)

The mud expands 14 times to reach the 6th column, that's 15*30-1 = 449
moves to get to right in front of it. You have to step on every
trapdoor square below the forcearrows and in the upward 1-square
passage, that's 367 moves. To get to the first trapdoor from the
right-hand entrance is a distance of 37 steps. That makes 404
steps, and leaves only 45 smites with the sword, most of which
will be in the bottom passage (assuming no retreats!). But now
the bottom passage is a total of 33x3 squares of tar, three wide,
of which you can leave 5 2x3 sections standing, giving you an
extra 23x2=46 smites required. You can shave some on the last 3x3
block IF you can escape onto the first trapdoor without killing
all, but that may be impossible. Please someone check the
numbers, but this one may not be possible (Or I miscounted by a
spawn cycle, in which case there's egg on my face and its just
really really really hard, rather than violating the laws of
reality as such :)) One arrow further might just be possible...

Please, if that's possible, I'd love to see the demo!

It should also be shown in slayer academy to show them how to
REALLY move... :*)

Cheers,
Rothro

Ok - did it (well, almost. The tar actually grew out to the seventh square because I fumbled on the efficiency towards the end, but I wasn't going to do it over). Wow, that was painful.

Hi,

:Notworthy

Well Done. I suppose that will occupy the No 1 spot for the demos?
(Have to wait til tonight to try it out).

This is what makes the game so great:

Step 1: Frustration - I can't do it! :weep

Step 2: Motivation - I'm so close! :huh

Step 3: Triumph - I've done it! Look upon my works, ye mighty... :w00t

Step 4: Curiosity - was that good or just lucky? :unsure

Step 5: Enlightenment - Oj, that's what I could have done. :blush

Step 6: Admiration - He did it HOW much faster? Boy, that was slick. :Notworthy

Onward, must... open... dreamplane...

Cheers,
Rothro

Actually, really, really not. You need to be efficient, but in a different way.

That sentence makes me smile. :)

Sorry about the painfulness, I always feel a little guilty about issuing challenges like these. But not too much, because I've already done it.

I think the original challenge is pure efficiency, so I'd assume that the top demo satisfies it. But I'm not near Drod so I can't check.

I noticed. When I got to drod last night I could not find it.
I don't suppose you might find it in your heart to post a demo?

You see, my only idea as how to approach this is pure efficiency.
I believe you can still see my neck dangling waaay out of the
window there from previous posts...

If you now fulfill the challenge but take more moves
than I calculated were possible it is something I would like to
be able to add to my bag of tricks. Stefan PM'd me with a
different idea which sounded rather plausible, but I still
could not pull it off myself.

Cheers
Rothro

Well, I couldn't of the first time I did it because I did it in the editor (I don't have a save on level 24 at home).

But today when I was at work (where I keep my normal build of JtRH) I decided I'll try doing it again; unfortunately, I made a fatal mistake relatively early on (around move 2000), but I think the demo I have is self-explanatory enough.

I am impressed, this kind of approach would not have occurred to
me in a long time. Move 2000 relatively early on?!? Man - that
must have been painful. Thank you for the demo!! You're right
its self-explanatory, once you pull a trick out of the hat
which I thought was not possible at all. Well done!

Cheers,
Rothro

Well, it was mostly painful because of how easy it is to screw things up - waiting those turns mostly involved positioning myself and pressing CTRL+5 a lot.

Hi Wraithwing,

If you need help with this room, please check the Hints and Solutions board. The Get Help for a Room feature there allows you to search for hints on any published room.

Help for Journey to Rooted Hold : Twenty Fourth Level : 1 South, 1 West is here. :)

The Challenges board is for people who would like to boast about solving rooms in ways more challenging than necessary. It's not meant to help you solve rooms for the first time.
