I question the timed poll. Reason: This question will still be as relevant in 9 weeks.
First thing out of the gate is that it entirely depends on the games and your tastes. Hardware is pretty much a non-issue at this point of development, as all of the hardware can support pretty much anything a developer would like to do.
I very much like the Xbox's BIOS, and the idea of a hard drive. I like that console games can just assume there's save space while still clinging to the standard console save file formats. And I've always had a distaste for revealing too much of the underlying mechanics of the save format (see PS2 telling us how many megabytes I have. It's not elegant.)
On the other hand, the PS2 has the largest library of games, and a large portion of games that I'd like to play (Ka-ti-ma-ri da-man-cy!) I've already played Halo, thought the single-player was rather weak, multiplayer was good but that involves having friends to play with. Xbox Live is a bit more compelling now I have broadband, but I've got more games I'd like to play on PS2 than on Xbox. So I'd have to say PS2 at this point in time.
Actually, I'm kind of interested to see how this plays out, because while this is the ol' "
System Wars"
question, we've got a lot of respectful people here, so it most likely won't devolve into a rash of name-calling and 'uh-huh' 'nuh-uh', and a lot of people here play and like their GameCube (myself included), which adds an added dimension into the mix.
