icon DROD faster on NT platform? (+1)
Strange thing happened to me yesterday. After finally installing DROD on my new Win2K install, I went to play DROD. I was stupid, and had a couple programs running that I probably shouldn't have while playing DROD (IM client, Firefox). Strangly, as I went to play it, it seemed faster. I then loaded my test benchmark hold (The character running across the screen) and it finished about a second faster. Weird. If anything, I would have thought that would have run slower. I hadn't upgraded my hardware since last playing DROD, so I came to temporary conclusions:

1. DROD loads faster of a NTFS hard drive.
2. DROD runs faster on a NT-based kernel.

If a developer could explain this a bit to me, I'd be interested in hearing it. Personally, I found it interesting and good to see that, as my old computer, while still runnning acceptably, had some fits with editor. Those have since been gone since my upgrade. Thanks.

I'm doubtful of these conclusions and we'd really need to look into this scientifically to learn the truth, i.e. setting up good controls where only one factor has changed. There are so many factors involved, like if you are talking about two different hard drives, if a hard drive is fragmented or not, if you are running certain apps in the background, if you picked up a virus, if you've got more memory installed, if you forgot to turn the key repeat setting all the way up, if your video card drivers are different, etc. etc. etc. It seems possible that the two conclusions you described are true, but I can't think of any theories to support them, and the effort needed to prove them true is probably not worth it.

Hate to be killjoy, my friend, but we must all be seekers of truth! :)

Hey, I'm happy it runs faster. I was just curious if you guys had optimized it for the newer OS' out there. I'm an inquisitive little bugger, yes! :)

For many reasons, I prefer that to anything else. It's good to know that people won't have to upgrade an OS just to play a new version of DROD. Awesome!

IIRC, we've refined the move repeat handling in JtRH so it should perform almost identically across OSes and processors (except on 486s, probably ;)). In ant event, the experience will be more consistent than it was in 1.5 and AE.
