Ok, this doesn't really belong in this forum - it probably deserves a whole forum of it's own - but because this is beta stuff, this seems like the right place for me.

Anyway, I thought we should have a thread where we can share our new holds - both for testing purposes (see if they work across systems, etc.) and also our own enjoyment.

So, here is my very first hold - The Old Sewers of Blorn. It's only 1 levels and 5 rooms in size; I may expand it one day, but not anytime soon.

So, without further ado, here is the hold that will teach ole' king Dugan what "roach-infested" really means:

The Old Sewers of Blorn

Any and all comments welcome.

Eytan

Um...how exactly do we get the stuff to import? This may be the question of the year.

You import by pressing "where", then "import", then typing in (manually, there's no file dialog) the directory the file was downloaded to. Then, press ENTER, and the file should appear in the file list below. Select it, press "okay", and you're done.

- Download his .hold file.
- Start DROD
- Click the "Where" brick
- Click "Import"
- If there's nothing in the "Current Directory" field, type c:\\ in it and press enter. (BUG: The first time you do an import, there's nothing in the field and nothing in the list box)
- Browse to the file you downloaded, click it, and press Okay.

Tada! It's been imported. Then make sure you select the new hold and press Continue on the main menu to play it!

By the way, nice hold... fun levels, and I killed about... 3 million roaches I think.

Uh, in the DROD directory there's a Data\\Homemade directory, which is where all the import/export files should naturally go. I recommend everyone put holds, etc., there. (Once that file dialog is working correctly, it'll point there right from the start.)

The (build 15-19) installer doesn't create such a directory, at least mine didn't.

Okay...I think my problem was that I'm still using Build 17, which didn't allow any punctuation/symbols. I'll get on that tonight, along with finishing my snake level. Is there a place set up for exporting?

I don't believe there's anywhere set aside for holds at the moment - but I'll be happy to host any holds that anyone wants me to on my webspace until there is one. Email the hold files to me at eytanzw@yahoo.com.

Sure, its fine. After the beta, we'll make a new board. I don't want to encourage people to make holds unless they are part of the testing effort. Too many bugs! But posting some stuff here is a good way to have a little fun.

I'll go out of my way to play other stuff that Eytan comes up with. This little "sampler" was a nice break and helped remind me that there is a point to all this bugfixing work.

Thanks for all the kind words! I don't have anything much to add, except that Krammer is right - 1 East is missing a force arrow. And that the balance is definitely a bit suspect, the easiest room being last. But a lot of this was experimentation - I'm definitely going to put more thought into the big picture in post-beta holds I design.

I just wanted to test a little something I've been working on. Hopefully, you'll be able to download this hold via the link under my profile.

THIS IS NOT WORKING RIGHT NOW. TESTING IN PROGRESS.

From the link he posted or the one under my name?

I found a bug which is appending superfluous (irrelevant) info to the end of exported holds. The fix for this bug will be in build 20 (coming tomorrow, I believe).

However, this bug (adding the extra data at the end of the file) also uncovered another bug. Take, for example, eytanz's hold. For some people it works, but for others it's causing DROD to crash (or show a corrupted data message) when attempting to import it (including myself). It's this second bug that is actually causing the corrupted data messages. It's saying some timestamps in the data files are an hour off.

So I'm just curious: maybe it's a daylight savings or timezone problem? :huh

In any event, when build 20 comes out, could you re-export and re-post your hold, eytanz?

Okay, my attached file mod IS working... it's just that I used phpMyAdmin to edit the record, and THAT actually screwed it up.
Hrmph.

Feel free to try it again... The hold is
under my name on the left of this post.

Assuming all goes well, I'll put a file size limiter on it and turn it on for everybody tomorrow.

There's definitely something wrong in 1S1E - when I lost the editing rights to the hold and had to redo it all from scratch I forgot to do something in this room - but I can't see how to do what Scott just said... Could someone explain it to me so I can fix the room?

Ah, ok. That's possible because of the omission I mentioned above; you wouldn't be able to do that if I hadn't made that mistake.

That said, the entire bottom half of the room is redundant - you don't have to lead any roaches to the end. So I need to think how to fix that (if possible).

Hmm - I tried importing the demo just for fun and as soon as I clicked the "Import" button, DROD crashed back to the desktop.

Don't know if this is a bug, because I tried exporting and importing my own and it was fine. Maybe it's the demo file.

Actually I can't import that demo and I exported it. DROD crashes to the desktop everytime. Its not a problem with the upload process as it compares exactly with the exported version. I also tried using the export version it also crashes. So there must be some problem with that particular demo file.

Right-clicking said it took 613 roaches and 1272 moves to beat the first room.
