Freeciv is a clone (and a very good clone I might add) of the classic computer game of Civilization. This is very well done and I really enjoy playing it. One complaint about it... the AI is very difficult. You really need to advance as quickly as possible. The first time that I played it, I had just discovered a few advancements, then found one of the AI players. They started attacking me with tanks and planes and I had just discovered gunpowder.

Anyway, it is freeware and can be downloaded at: www.freeciv.org
They have downloads for multiple Operating Systems.

EDIT: accidently put .ort instead of .org for the link... sorry.

So... where do I download it? The Windows version download redirects me to another website with nothing in it.

Make sure you're clicking on the file itself and not the OS name, which links to the Readme.

ftp://ftp.freeciv.org/freeciv/beta/Freeciv-2.0.0-beta6-win32.zip

That link is for thier latest beta... which is very good.

EDIT: If you have problems with the link, just FTP the file directly. You can use an FTP program to ftp to freeciv.org and then browse to /freeciv/beta, then transfer the file of the last beta (beta 6).

Cool! I managed to download it.

There's one problem, though. When I run client.exe it says "could not find server", when I run manual.exe nothing happens, and when I run server.exe it says "not enough players". Am I doing something wrong, or is this a multiplayer-only game?

No, it is not only a multi-player game. I clicked on it and selected to start a new game and it worked fine.
Not sure why it is not working for you. You could always try the latest stable version (not as easy to use and the AI is much harder). The download for that is:
ftp://ftp.freeciv.org/pub/freeciv/packages/windows/freeciv-1.14.1-win32.zip

On the topic of Civilization, does anyone know of a patch for Civ that will allow the music to play properly through my high-tech sound card? I only get the left channel or something.

Do you think it would be possible to modify the source code into something similar to Master of Magic ?

I love this game. I still play it once in a while (dosbox).

Master of Magic is an awesome game. There always seem to be about half a dozen rewrites of it happening at one place or another, but I don't know of any that are complete or near completion.

About MOM2 - Master Of Magic 2 is most probably on the way. Copyright negotiations are in progress (Stardock and Atari). It can take a lot of time. Stardock is independant developer and publisher in one. I think they're best known for Galactic Civilisations, but it doesn't ring any bells for me.

They said they'll probably do it. They want to do it old-school way, with little gameplay changes aside from fixing/rebalancing some spells and stuff. Not repeating all the bugs of MOM alone would be great (some spells simply don't work at all, crash the game or their effect is opposite to what it should be!).They said no one can force them to "modernize" the gameplay. They aren't going to leave that DUMB ai, of course.

For more info, check unofficial website www.masterofmagic2.com.
I hope they're going to implement multiplayer, too.
