Is it possible to do this room without the invisibility potion like the scroll says? I can kill either of the mothers but then I can't get anywhere near the next one coz of all the babies!

It 'tis indeed possible. I actually did it without when I first tested the hold.

I can't get down to the second mother once i've killed the top one. Do you have to clear some of the tar away so that more babies can't be formed or is that a waste of time?
