In "The Untold Untold Tales of Gunthro Budkin", Forest:5N1E, I can consistently get the game to crash by deliberately failing the challenge (killing soldiers before hitting the orb). I suspect it is because those soldiers are talking while I kill them.

I just upgraded to 5.1.1.427X.

That happened with me too. And I too assumed that it was because of while they were speaking. Then I tried to kill after they stopped talking. But that too didn't work. Is there something wrong with the update?

When I first saw this, I messed around - could not get the crash in 5.1 but I could in the 5.1.1 beta, although I did not have Nyctophile's experience of the game crashing if I waited until the speech was done.

Grabbed the update and tested it. Killed the nearby soldier, no crash.

I'm curious as to what the cause was.

Some performance improvements were added that cleaned up dead monsters, mostly for rooms that generate then discard large numbers of NPCs (eg conways). Due to an oversight, monsters connected to custom speech events would get cleaned up, which would then cause a game crash when trying to set the speaker face for those speech events.

Can confirm in 5.2.0.508 that dead characters that are queued up to speak no longer crash the game.

Not sure if intended: dead characters have their speech recorded in the speech log but it doesn't show up in the room and conversation always immediately jumps past their speech.
