Maurog wrote that just like other monsters, characters die when you put a wooden stake in their heart.
I disagree. There are no wooden stakes in JtRH, but people may have somehow gotten conused about it, since people don't generally know what is in JtRH, and what isn't. In any case, the wooden stake is a joke, since it is not a game element.
Also, (this I just spotted), I don't think you read Eytan's post carefully. Maurog also said that "
...they will kill you if they can, and drink all your blood..."
, which is not true, as Eytan pointed out.
NOT that it's the only way.
Can you imagine a creature that would survive having its heart pierced by wooden stake ? No higher lifeform can, I think...
Any higher creature could technically survive (for a short while) having its heart pierced by a stake. What kills the animal is usually the overload to the brain from the pain signals generated by the nervous system it possesses. What's more, with the intervention of external help in the form of anaesthetics or very cold water, this could be extended probably to about 1-2 hours, since the oxygen demand from the body would decrease to very low levels, and so technically, the transport system would become unnecessary. The leaking of blood will also be a factor involved, but certainly, this would not cause instant death.
...and saying that amoebas have hearts feels like stretching to me
Amoebae are single-celled organisms, so this doesn't make any sense. Only large organisms (with millions of cells or more) with the need for an active transport system have things like hearts. Small organisms can usually just survive on passive transport mechanisms like diffusion.
